BD1980 has a picture elsewhere that Sap has tentatively identified as being in Kufic script, and it reminded me of one of my own unknowns.
Is this in any way similar?

Yep.

It's another early Islamic copper. Not quite as early as BD1980's example, I think, though styles for coppers tended to vary a lot more than for silver and gold coins.

OK, sorry for the delay, but I think I've found a pretty good match for this one: Umayyad caliphate, earlier than I'd assumed, from the province the early Arabs called al-Jazirah, which we know today as Kurdistan, Iraq. This example, from Harran mint in what is now southeastern Turkey, is a particularly good match, for the obverse at least.

Thank you Sap.
My usual collecting habits don't stray much earlier than 1700, and Old World at that. So to have a coin, which I have no recollection of ever buying, of such antiquity is truly mind blowing.
I doubt that it's of any value, but it's nice to have something like that. Just hope it doesn't lead me into further bad habits, i.e. exciting new collecting areas!
