I did not know if it was worth sending this one off for a slab or not.

Your have scans then photos of the same coin.

Choice AU. Unless its a rare variety, I wouldn't say its worth it.

What makes this coin stop short of being classified as a lower grade MS type coin?

I have always had difficulty knowing when to draw the line on this issue no matter what coin I'm looking at.

Please point out specifically the features that are holding it back on this particular coin.

Thanks

I think whats causing others to think this is a AU coin rather than a low grade MS coin, is that the braid in the hair and lower wing section on the obverse is lacking details of a good strike, but it may just be the fuzziness of the picture. Hairline marks at her lip and neck area.

But honestly, you have enlarge the dime to at least 5X, so all minimal imperfection is blowing out of proportion, so it may still be a MS60 coin.
Also, its rather common coin for the year even for a high grade coin I wouldn't submit to TPG, unless is at least MS67 quality. Perhaps looking at actual examples of TPG high grade and compare to what you have will give you a better understanding.

I agree, nice coin, but not worth the cost of the grading + shipping. I bought a '42 Merc at a local coin show graded MS65 by PCGS for $20

I try to find luster breaks on the high points for the AU vs. MS grade. It's tough with pics.

I agree it looks AU55 or 58.

A very weak strike BU, not worth sending in but not junk either. How about a coin album?

In the later years there were a lot of weak strikes in this series, Worn dies etc. causing weak or poor details Giving the photo quality I give it a MS60
