Denver Post article

Quote:
The Federal Reserve Bank in Denver will open a museum in January that showcases the history of money, how to detect counterfeit notes and a display of $30 million in cash.

The 7,000-square-foot Money Museum and conference center will be on the first floor of the Federal Reserve building downtown.

Until now, public access to the building, which is on the 16th Street Mall between Champa and Arapahoe streets, has been restricted to tour groups, with about 1,200 visitors a year.

Now, walk-in visitors will be welcome, with photo ID required for those 18 and older. The Money Museum will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, excluding bank holidays.

"This will be something to complement what the Mint has," said Stacee Montague, spokeswoman for the Federal Reserve. "It will bring a little bit of excitement to the 16th Street Mall."

Quote:
The museum won't be the first to be housed in a Federal Reserve bank. Kansas City, Cleveland and San Francisco are among the branches that have money museums.

The Kansas City and Cleveland Fed branches don't have a Mint facility ten blocks away.

San Francisco's Mint is not open to the public.

Thus, only Denver will be able to offer you the ability to tour a Federal Reserve facility and a Mint facility.

Another thing to do if I ever find myself in Denver again.

More to look forward to on my next trip I was out there in 2005 for my honeymoon but got screwed out of the Mint tour(on my birthday of all days) by the post-9/11 security procedures. Until May 2005, one needed a Congressional pass complete with Fed background check to go on a Mint or BEP tour. I contacted my Senator months ahead of time...and nothing. I then called only to find out that the pass system was scrapped and they were not aware of a new system and the Mint's website still referred to the Congressional passes. My wife and I arrived in Denver and showed up at the Mint for a tour. I was then informed that tours were done on a first-come-first serve signup basis and that the entire week of tours was filled Monday morning by grade school kids that probably couldn't care less about the Mint

I'll have to check this out next month. I hope it's better than the Denver Mint tour where you don't really see very much.
