How do you determine what to sell 40% silver for? I have lots of JFK's from 65-69 which I assume or 40% as I see no copper. What is a reasonable price to charge somebody for $300 fv of 40% silver. My mental math if getting very weak. Wish there was an easy formular for 90% and 40% related to spot...say 20 times for 90 and 7 times for 40. Any suggestions?

There are simple formulas to use to calculate silver value of U.S. coins. For 90% silver use: 0.715 X Spot Price. This will give you the multiplier. For 40% use: 0.295 X Spot Price. Right now at $29.59 spot we're at 21.1X face for 90% and 8.7X for 40%.

Remember these are silver value and form a starting point for pricing. Many people buy and sell at under spot. Sometimes well under spot these days. Good Luck!

P.S. Here's an allowable link:

Yes, 1965-1970 halves are 40% silver.

I did a completed listings search on ebay and they seem to be going for about $75-$85 for $10 face.

Thanks for all the help. Isn't it unreal how the price of junk silver is rising. I have $300 fv in 40% JFK and $150 of 90%, mostly Franklines. I figure I have more than $5000 in junk silver just sitting there. Wow.

Due to the extra cost of refining 40% halves expect to get much less than silver value for them. At around $2650 of silver for $300 FV of 40% I would say you could expect about $2000. I would consider anything above 6X face to be good. I can hardly find anyone to give that around here.

You will get your best price from the popular on-line auction site, with a slight fee, of course. Their auctions seem to dictate the price paid for coins and junk silver.
