I would like an opinion from those that have been through a lot of these rolls. I have at least three rolls of every one and each mint, but never opened them.

Could someone tell me what the average grade is that they see in a String roll?

I am just trying to log these into a coin program and want to put some kind of grade in (as an average).

My other question is: is there any reason NOT to open the rolls? I can't see that String rolls have a particular value over single coins, is there?

Most were bought at face at the bank; others were back filled rom the dealer at $28.50/roll.

Thanks all,

Seth

i have been through about 5k worth of president dollars looking for errors all NF String. I wold say the bulk of them were ms64/65. Most of the damage on these coins seems to be on the edges, most of the coins have at least one ding or rough spot on the edge. There doesn't seem to be any premium on them on ebay, I have looked into selling them there, and the only time they sell with somewhat of a premium is when they just come out. If you are gong to open them, I don't see a problem with you getting fulls rolls again later for not much of a mark up.

I'm not a good grader, but I haven't been impressed with the quality of of the coins. Most have very noticeable bag marks and/or scratches. I usually open the rolls and save the best 2 or 3 coins and spend the rest.

Since you have 3 of each, why don't you open one and save the rest. It would let you determine the average grade for yourself, you'd have a few nice ones to show, and you'd still have rolls in the unlikely event that the price of rolls goes up.

The advantage of keeping them unopened is that there might be a slight premium because of a hypothetical error coin that may be in there. The advantage of opening them is you can keep the very best ones and not tie up as much cash.
