Lion, that is a horrific story.
I'm not worried about pricing and being fair with the guy - that's a given.
I'm more concerned with their potential condition. The way he described them, it sounds like they are in a Dansco, in a storage shed, "down by the river"!

I just don't know what to say about that story. Why would anyone turn down 100 thousand then sell for 4 cause they need cash?

Be careful. When I emigrated to the USA my household belongings were held up for almost 18months at the dock in a container. Included were most of my UK mint sets going back to the 40's and a whole bunch of general dark side material. When the stuff was eventually delivered there were obvious signs of water damage on the boxes. Sure enough after a year of two most of my mint sets had begun to show corrosion. If you do get the set I would suggest a soak in distilled water and or acetone for all the coins and replace the album just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Richard. Good idea. Got the new album part already covered! I'm just hoping he actually follows through with it. He's threatening to go dig them up out of storage this weekend. Of course, I'm going to volunteer to help. I've been trying for months for him to get them out and it's just not as important to him as it is for us. If and when he does, you guys get second peek - I promise!

I had a girlfriend awhile back . Said her dad left her some coins from his collection. She pulled them out as if they were some rare valuable coins worth millions , most were all worn heavy with no key dates.one morgan not CC or anything special Most coins he collected in the 1950's as a teen and a few silver coins he had saved in the 60's before he went to vietnam.offered to sell them to me for like $500 I luaghed and just said no thanks later she tried to sell think she got $40 for them all and maybe had $100 retail in coins. that was 10yrs ago today it might be 200$ in value if that just becuase silver is so high
Back when her dad collected it was " collecting " as in I like this one let me keep it with no reguards to how many were minted or what mint marks. Now a days most collectors not only collect they " invest " in coins they feel will make a profit down the road.
So lets hope this guys dad was a smart collector not just some guy plugging holes in a folder the best he could from circulation

I'm sure my collection won't be worth very much in the future because it's mostly stuff I've pulled from circulation, but they're coins that I like. The few coins I've purchased from coin dealers at shows were all from 1/2 price bins and I paid no more than $10 on a single coin because that's what I can afford. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on frivolous things like coins.

One of the problems with someone with a collection is how well you know them, if related, close friends, etc. In many instances when someone gets something, anything, from a deceased person, stories start eventually on how you cheated everyone. You got this million dollar (whatever) for nothing or practically nothing. You are a cheat, thief, robber, etc. Unfortunately and although this sounds like a bit impossible, I've seen it several times now. My own family for example. And if you do get something that no one else wanted, for the rest of your life you'll hear those rumblings on how they all wanted those and for some reason you got your cheating hands there. A nieghbor gave me a jar of old, or so he said old, coins to look through. I did and found nothing but dirty, corroded, stained junk. Yet he has hinted for years now how I probably found valuable ocins and just don't wnat to tell him. Of course this is the pessimistic view and may not happen in your case. Hopefully not. Sorry but I've seen and heard things like this for a long time now.

WOW! Congrats Scooby! I hope they are not just a collection of Good or better and missing the key dates. Lots of folks fill those old folders with junk and no keys. I've seen quite a few in my local shop. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Storage wars. lol make sure the rents paid. Good luck and hope you get some key dates. My dad lost his collection when he was stationed in japan. He had his collection stored state side with all of the furniture etc. When he got back he was told there was a fire everything lost. He got a couple hundred bucks from insurance. This was in the sixties, he told me he thought they stole his coins and burned his unit.

The majority of my collection has been pulled from circulation as well. And they are coins that I like, imagine that.
I don't have thousands of dollars to spend frivolously either. But, I am a single guy, making a decent living, with low overhead, that I have worked hard to achieve. How I spend my money is my business and I would appreciate it if you didn't bust my chops about it. Perhaps you missed the part about the lawaway?
It also puts me in a position to help and share with others, which I enjoy as much, if not more. If I see a $10, $20, $30 coin that I know someone will appreciate, it becomes a gift. No second thoughts about "losing" money.
