This coin was sent to me by a friend and not being a collector I was wondering what it might be worth and looking for a buyer.

Well if it's real you are holding a 5,000 dollar coin but it is impossible to tell if it is from the scan.I would recommend taking it to a coin dealer/shop and asking them to look at it BUT don't sell it to them in any circumstance.

Can't really tell much from the pictures, need to see both sides and larger images. My first impressions though are that it's a copy.

Here is a pic of a real one. Compare the dates particularly the "8" and also the strike characteristics to see why the scanned coin is a fraud:

It appears fenton is most likely correct. However a better picture of the coin front and back would allow a better judgement.

Tony, anyone who tells you otherwise speaks from extreme ignorance of US coins....The coin is definitely not genuine (by any stretch of the imagination)......

Compare the size and placement of the stars, the lettering, the portrait to Fenton's coin.....the difference is dramatic.

Besides what's been mentioned, stars are too small and Liberty has a pleasing grin, not a scowl.

An obvious fake, and my bet would be that it is a fake dollar and not a fake half dollar. You see a LOT of this style of fake dollars but I can't recall seeing this style of fake on a half dollar.
