Nice example of severe die wear. The 82 and 83 nickel dies are really known for this.

I think it's kind of cool. I haven't seen many really late die state coins like that.

I would keep it for educational purposes.

Is the wear and tear in the fields from pitting of the die?

Luster is caused by the movement outward across the face of the die by the planchet metal. The really tight flashy luster is from when the wear is tiny. As the wear increases the luster becomes more and more subdued. Finally the wear becomes visible to naked eye and you see a satiny or even an orange peel surface and if it keeps continuing and getting larger you get what you see on this coin.
