I found an AU 1964 penny (clean and still red) in circulation today that has a clipped planchet. I'm not sure how to tell if it's damage that occurred at the Mint or if it happened afterward. I know the default is to assume that all damage happened after a coin entered circulation, but are there any characteristics I can look at to tell if it happened pre-circulation?
Some pics of the whole coin including the reverse would help. What does the rim look like directly opposite the clip (rim at the area of the date and mintmark)?
Is the rim in that area fully formed or weak and not raised as well as the rest of the coin?
I would say that is an authentic clipped planchet! I can clearly see that the rim directly across from the clip at the date is poorly formed. This is called Blakesley Effect. Nice find!
