I have 2883 Jefferson nickels put away. Would this be called a coin hoard or just alot of coins? What would be called a hoard?

I would define a hoard as "a pile of coins gathered together for no apparent purpose other than having a pile of coins". The difference between a "hoard" and a "collection" is more about the attitude of you, the hoarder/collector, than it is about numbers of coins. If each and every coin is meaningful to you in some way and you could pick it out from the other 2882 coins in a lineup, then that's not a hoard, it's a collection. If you tossed them all into a big bucket and have no idea exactly what's in the bucket, except for a vague impression that they're all Jefferson nickels, then that's not a collection, it's a hoard.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Kinda hard to ride "hoard" over 2883 buffaloes partner! 2882 is do-able though.

You would need to filled all of the corners of your house with little path to move around to be a hoarder, and it means even coins on the table you serve food on. ;>

I probably have about the same number of Jefferson's myself. I would say it is very close. I feel your pain. A hoard is more than you can move in one trip to another place. As for the 8 foot table we have in the dining room .... this is a normal occurrence.

My collection. I have coins every where. In desk drawers, laying on my monitor stand, in jars of olive oil, in the drawers of my night stand, filing cabinets, on top of my desk, and bank deposit boxes.

Most excellent definitions by Sap.....I will remember them both.

i collect a lot of coins, but I have very little time to catalog and grade them,i am waiting for my holidays, hence I am a sort of coin collector with huge number of coins to care for.
warm wishes.

In my opinion, the word "hoard" when relating to, or the description of, a coin collection, isn't a derogatory adjective at all. Quite the contrary in fact. It's a light-hearted loving and endearing term. And one that I'd use with a smile ! My "hoard" is spread everywhere as well. Tables, office, desks, safety deposit boxes, containers, albums, folders, closets, secret places, coin tubes, 2x2's, etc. etc. etc.

My ebay handle is two_bit_hoard. I'm relieved to hear that by Sap's definition I'm not a hoarder at all.
