My dad gave me this coin as one of my first when I started collecting. I was wondering what anyone thinks of the problem(?) to the right of the date, if it was caused by the mint, and if anyone has seen anything like it before. I'm still pretty new to all of this...Thanks!

the coin is pitted, but I would like a close up of the area you refer to at the side of the date.

it looks like a lamination, but then I see the adjacent area on the denticles, and that looks more like damage to me - so I'm not sure.

Laminations were common in 1857, there could be some damage too.
