I've seen some sources in the past that list varieties of 1940S as:

Small S, Plain 4
Small S, Crosslet 4
Large S, Plain 4
Large S, Crosslet 4

I have nearly a full roll of 1940S and I haven't noticed any differences in the 4 or the S. Does anyone know anything about the varieties of this date?

I'm thinking you could be talking about 1941S.

Nope, I'm talking about 1940S. I have a few examples of each 1941S variety. Since you aren't aware of any date or mint mark style variation in 1940, it is probably the case that someone published the varieties as 1940 and then others cited that publication. I can't be sure but I think I remember reading in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia that 1940 has these varieties. Another location is http://stanford.edu/~clint/q/01linc.htm

I will make note of this and make it a point to study this at some time in the future when I have more time - all I can say for now is that I grabbed my binder of die varieties and looked through 17 MS examples of 1940S cents and all of them had the same 4 and the same style of mintmark.

I thought the 40-s and the 41-s has 'mini' s mintmarks and regular sized mintmarks. I could be wrong but I got a few of both. Very small 's' on the 'mini' one. It's alot smaller than the 39 or the 42. I'm no expert and always wondered about these 2 years and their small 's' marks.

That I am aware the 1940S has the same mintmark as 1939S...as does many of the 1941S cents. 1941S also sports a larger mintmark that continued into 1942.

Basically, 1941S has two mintmarks - a large and a small, and the small is more common.

Neither year has a 'mini' mintmark. That would be the 1945S dimes with the 'micro' S which at one time was considered scarce. Now they are all over the place and have very little premium value.
