Hi everyone, can anyone let me know what this coin is please and date/(any value)it? Is it Egyptian? I'm very new to coins, know nothing about them, I was given a jar of coins as a child and thought it was about time I found out about them. I'm trying my best to 'google' them but some are beyond me! Sorry if photos are dodgy, I've tried my best! many thanks and a very Happy Christmas to all. Identified - moved to World Coins forum - Sap

1 or 2 Kurush(need weight or diameter) from Turkey. AH1293 regnal year 22, 23, 32 or 33(need better top pic) 1896, 1897, 1906 or 1907.

The legend corresponds to 2 kurus. But to be 100% sure check that the diameter is 17-18 mm. To determine the reignal year, as DCH said, we need a better pic.
It's 83% silver with .0642 oz. of actual silver weight (provided I'm right about the denomination).
And welcome to the forum, shnn, and Merry Christmas to you too!

svslav, I don't see any difference between the 1 and 2 Kurus legends. Am I missing something?

Quote: AH1293 regnal year 22, 23, 32 or 33(need better top pic) If you can't post a better pic of the obverse (top pic), then you might be able to read the date there for yourself. The area containing the regnal date is here: The dates are written in Arabic numerals - you want the "Indian" not the "Persian" version from that Wikipedia table.

Sorry forgot to say 'thank you' to all and especially Sap for the arabic numbers. I was trying to find something like that. I'm still not sure though, the figures on the coin are so tiny! I think I will probably have to get a magnifying glass, unless of course! my guess at the moment would be 32.

This is really interesting, thank you all! and yes after another look could be 22. If I give the coin a wash in just some hot water and a bit of detergent, would this be okay? Or should I leave alone?

Leave it alone! No water, absolutely no detergent, and no rubbing of any kind! [edit: I can't spell "no" ]

Yes, that's a better picture, and I would agree with the 1293/22 date. That converts to the year 1314 in the Islamic calendar, which began in June AD 1896.

Many thanks to you all, I'll be listing another coin later,I've identified a lot on my own from my jar ( ebay & google) but as I have no knowledge of coins, its not easy! I'm off work at the present so if I don't do something about my coins, they may well remain in the jar for another 40 years! Has the 2 kurush any value please?

Well, it's silver (.830 fine) so even if nothing else, there's $1.90 of silver in there at current prices. Year 22 is a common date for these; I'd say it would be worth 3 or 4 dollars at most in that condition.
If it helps, the other three former possibilities for the year (23, 32 and 33) are all equally common dates.
