Want a loupe to see some coins better. What magnification do you recommend? 10x, 20x, 30x? I'm trying to get a better view on dates and making out mm's (i.e S over D and such) All advice is appreciated.

I have a 5x 10x 20x and 30x. I got 3 of them for $7 on Amazon. I like the 30x. Why mess around.

I like the 10x I find anything more powerful makes me squint and bothers my eyes.

The quality of optics is very important for clarity and eye strain reduction. An el cheapo 30x doesn't hold a candle to a good quality 10x hastings triplet loupe. Also, try to find the largest lens diameter possible in a given magnification- it will allow for more viewable area of a coin.

I have a very nice 10x that I really like. This is my first loupe and I'm guessing this is your first also so let me tell you two things I've run across. My father has one with a light on it - really nice. Plus it also has a larger viewing area and in my opinion, a big plus.

Thank you all for the advice. It seems the best way to purchase one of these would to be in person rather then over the net. I'm guessing the one's on ebay going for $2-$9 would be a poor choice. I think I'll start with the 10x and go higher if needed. Again, thanks for to all for the advice...

I actually bought mine on the net and wish I wouldn't have. It's such a small loupe. It has some really nice lenses in it though, very clear and nice magnification also. I do wish I would have picked one up at a coin show though.

right now I'm using a 10x hastings triplet & I love it. But I really believe I should invest in a scope. Just so I don't overlook those little notches.

Buy what your budget will allow. I use a 10x cheaper one myself. If I think I see something them I use my phone camera and the loupe to get a closer look.

insideout makes a good point... if you have any kind of Mega Pixel camera you can just snap a shot.

I use a 14x doublet that cost less then $7 and I like it a lot, so price isn't always a factor. I started out using a 10x doublet many years ago that cost less then $10 but now my eyes are not the best and I am mainly into roll searching for errors and varieties so the 14x works better then the 10x. For most people I would recommend starting out with a 10x Hastings Triplet, if price isn't a factor because it will cost a bit more then a $7 doublet. It's really what works best for you so try a few, start out with a 10x doublet for no more then $10 and work up from there.IMHO,
