I noticed the Red Book lists many halves after 2000 as NIFC. If not circulation, what WERE they intended for? Also the values show about the same whether the mintage was 20,000,000 or 2,000,000 or less. What gives? I'm a newbie about halves because my area banks rarely have any for me to search so I never really got into them to know what's happening with them.

NIFC- Not Intended For Circulation. You can order them by the bag or roll from the US Mint. They are basically for coin collectors. A few are showing up in rolls after whom ever ordered them dumped them.

Correct, sold to collectors; at a premium, of course.

People order the bags/rolls and cherry pick the high grades. They dump the rejects into circulation because selling them would not be profitable. The profit made on the higher grade keepers could make it worthwhile.

Most likely the NIFC halves won't ever be worth much, but when I find them in my roll searching, I put 'em aside. For face value, it's worth a shot.

I'm with Okiepb...I set aside a few of each year and hope for the best. At least they will always be worth 50 cents. ;-)

I roll search halves every week and will keep anything 03 and newer unless they are beat to pulp. I'm with the others here thinking that worse case scenerio is you get rid of them and get face for them. In 40 / 50 years my kids and grandkids can figure out what to do with them. :)

Yes, I keep them too, though I often wonder why. Just seems like something with a mintage of only a million or two when everything else is in the hundreds of millions should be kept.

Just found a nice NIFC 1987D. Is it worth holding onto more than the NIFC's from the 2000's?
