I search a lot of N.F. String penny boxes and I was wondering what the 4-digit number stamped on the bottom means.

Most of my recent boxes have the number 2577 on the bottom but some have no number at all.

Is that your district code? Might be a delivering method since I never see them on mine. It may also be the district code from N.F. Strings.

I've had boxes that had different numbers from the same bank before, so I don't know.

I thought it was an "Inspected by" where they check to make sure there are 50 rolls in the box.

I always thought it was a district code but think it may be a teller code. If the box comes up short, then it can be traced back. I have seen multiple codes from the bank I get mine from.

That seems about right. Thanks.
