This is my first Seated Liberty Half purchase. So I gotta ask about the stars here on my 1855 O. I threw in the extra pics for fun just cause I have em. The obverse has a tooled appearance. Both the stars and Miss Liberty appear to have been ground down, perhaps in an attempt to remove scratches or other surface problems. Photos of the entire obverse/reverse surfaces would might help us figure out what's going on. Using only the images provided this appears to be a coin with serious problems.

I agree, the buildup around the stars are a good indication that tooling has occurred. I have seen build up like this with whizzing also. Doubling can not occur 360 degrees around a device because that would be a small star over a large star not doubling, there is some Mechanical Doubling (that doesn't raise the value and not really considered doubling at all) that is all the way around but this doesn't look like one of those cases

I do not believe this is longacre doubling either, I really believe what bherring has said that it seems to be the result of some type of tooling

Cool, thanks for all the awesome info! With a loupe I can see what appears to be the Longacre doubling on all stars, around lady liberty, the date, arrows. For example, in my photo above you can see a lip under the liberty cap, on Liberty's nose and the top of east arrow. The date and arrows is what initially drew me to the coin. So I'm left with a couple of questions. What would make this not a Longacre? How does this affect the value of the coin? Thanks!!

I concur with Longacre doubling, it should not affect the value.

No worries, it is my fault for not posting better pics! And the coin isn't in great condition with a lot of the doubling difficult to see.

I'm learning, too!
I just wanted to be sure I understood whether I was looking at retooling, Lonagcre or maybe both.

I assume that this "Longacre doubling" refers to Chief Engraver James Longacre? What is the accepted cause of this effect? edited to add: Never mind, I just clicked the links in this thread to see what the accepted theories are..... Counter-intuitive to me... not buying any of that stuff.
