Please tell me I'm not the only one! Every branch of my bank I have gone too and I have visited 4 has given me a hard time about buying boxes of pennies. I tried putting in regular weekly orders at 2 of the branches and they still give me lame excuses. I finally had to go a district manager to get service. I have also gone to several other banks in town but have been told if not a customer they refuse to sell them to me. OK I vented, no more compaining!

Seems only fair to me. The banks have to put in a little effort to get boxes of coins. It's easy enough to open a small account to end the problem.

I have to be honest. In this economy, if I owned a bank no one would get them unless they had a business account with a retail walk-in business.

I would like to hear myself from others on this topic,,I think a little charm doesn't hurt,I have a friend that bought a 1000.00$ in half dollars from a bank 2 days ago,,and does it all over the country,,sometimes I think they are going to hit the alarm when I approach,,your not alone,,LIVE FREE!

You would think as a customer for 10yrs, never bouncing a check and always being friendly would count for something.

I live in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Canada. Fortunately for me I have no issues getting coins at most banks in the city except for BMO. They have a strict policy of clients only. Same issue with the Credit Unions. I have no problem with this. I just open a savings account with them if need be. With-in the last 2 months...One of my regular banks (no account with them) has stopped selling me any coinage. They said they received a notice about allowing non clients to purchase large amount of coinage (ie. boxes) and to exchange any coinage or other currency without having an account. I was also told that now they have to put any and all cash transactions through the clients account while processing. No more walking in and asking to break hundreds into smaller bills and such. I was told that the notice was issued to try and prevent any and all money laundering. They were very apologetic. No worries I said...rules are rules. I frequent other branch locations off the same bank in the city and have not yet had any troubles. I thought that maybe they were just saying that but the teller showed me the notice they received. Maybe the same thing is happening in certain parts of the states.
In Canada...we can not get halves in boxes and rarely if at all see them in the banks in CWR. Same thing goes fro any pre Loonie Dollars. Next to impossible to get. SIGH!

LiveFree, you are not alone. Even at the banks I'm a member of I can still get a hard time when asking for rolls. However, at the bank branch I visit most, since they see me all the time, I don't have a problem. The problem is that the boxes are semi-heavy and they don't like to carry 'em. And they don't like counting rolls and carting 'em around when you bring 'em back. If I were you, and I've been a customer for ten years and I still get a hard time for asking for rolls, I'd change banks. Simple as that. Go to a bank where the tellers are talkative and friendly and just make sure that you are also!

my bank giving me problems? I would bank somewhere else. I could understand a bank that you didn't have an account with. In my part of the country banks are bending over to get customers so if I were treated rudely I would move to the next.

My bank gives me a $50 bag every Tuesday,no problems,no hassles,and with a smile.If they have extra,they tell me and I get them too.I'll admit that I switched banks about 4 times before finding this one but it had nothing to do with roll searching...just policy and friendliness.I have been there 15 years now and they haven't changed.

How is refusing to do something that's not their job rude? You're expecting them to spend money so you can make money. Your attitude reminds me of the employees that got so mad it made the news, just because they didn't get free turkeys from the boss one year at Thanksgiving. All of a sudden they forgot they were getting them free for 20 years. They're not cutting off something owed you, they're stopping something that they've been doing as a courtesy. Big difference.

Ha - further proof why I've kept my money in credit unions for the past 25+ years. My local credit union service center, which services 3 or 4 credit unions, is happy to sell me rolls of Presidential dollars and even go through their quarters in their booth trays (of course, I was the only customer in line at the time) to look for state park quarters. I wouldn't expect a money institution to procure boxes of coins and sell them to you unless you had an active account with them, but I would not keep an account with an institution which changed its procedures to cut you off from one of the services it had offered to you previously.

I did forget to mention that mine is a credit union. As for bobby131313's comment...I once owned a private convenience store in which we treated everybody like a friend..when I sold it, the new owner stopped all unecessary services or ones in which he didn't make money.It took only four years to go from $800K down to $200K in yearly sales.It now sits empty.

One thing I think everyone is missing here is the fact that it cost the bank money every time they order a box or send a bag of change back. There is a fee for this. That's how Brinks and Dunbar stay in business. With the economy today banks like all other businesses (and everyone in general) are cutting back on costs and spending.

I could sell $100 bills for $90 all day long on ebay and be a Titanium Power Seller with extremely impressive gross sales figures but what kind of business person does that make me? I am not going to pay to supply someone with boxes of coins every week just because they checking account with me. The people that handle those coins don't work for free. Ship a Fed box of halves lately? No business should have any qualms cutting customers that cost them money. That's not the way it works. If they choose to absorb it, that's one thing, but they shouldn't be expected to. One of the worst sayings in the business world is "The customer is always right." Not true, customers can be extremely unreasonable.

bobby131313...it sits empty because he went bankrupt.My profit was around 10% but I didn't work there.And yes we did things for free...saved pickle jars,jerky containers,cardboard boxes for customers..wrapped hoagies special for fishing the next day..gave away hoagies or ice cream when I felt like it.I could go on and on. All I can say is when livefree hits the lottery for 50 million, I know where he won't deposit his money. That saying about the customer being right is true, you just have to know how to apply it.
