I'm 90% sure that this is a proof of the Utah State Quarter. The camera doesn't capture this, but in hand this thing is like looking in a mirror. I've never seen a proof in circulation before (or just never noticed) so thats why I was confused. Any insight from you guys?

Since it has a Denver mintmark I wouldn't say that it is proof, but it may be a proof-like coin that comes from early production.

Definitely not a proof coin, just a normal CuNi clad business strike. Also, Denver does not mint proofs except for the occasional commemorative.

I think (if I'm remembering correctly) all proofs were minted by the sanfransisco mint from 1968 and onwords

Judging by the blemishes on the coin and the luster you describe, I think it is cleaned with some kind of polish or maybe just ran through a washing machine.

I just found a proof arizona in pocket change last week , its on another thread " found in circulation" a few days ago.
They all have " S " for the mint mark.

I deal with change everyday in my bussiness.
I have seen a few State Quarters that are " proof like " very shiney back grounds but the cameo effect is not present high fields cameo is frosted look that contrast the mirror look making the images appear to pop off the coin
