In 1983, my family visited Burlington, Vermont for a week. I picked up this little local piece from a coin dealer's scratchtray there.

Most modern tokens are ugly, utilitarian things, a far cry from the "golden age" of the late 1700s to mid-1800s. So this little piece appealed to me, even way back when I was a YN:

Montpelier,-Vermont-Parking-Token

What I'm asking is: does anyone know the approximate period of usage of these tokens, what face value they were sold for, and how they were used? I'm guessing in parking meters, but I don't know for sure - it sure looks too pretty to jam into a meter.

I'm also assuming, given their prettiness, that these tokens had some aspect of a tourist souvenir. From what I understand, Montpelier isn't a very large town and should never really have had much of a parking problem.

Hi there Sap

It is a neat piece. Guessing you didn't think to ask the coin dealer about it? I'm finding that it's really difficult to get info on tokens. At least you have a good idea of where it came from! I'm clueless on about 99% of my collection of tokens.

Maybe you could get the number for the Montpelier Historical Society? That is if you don't get the answer here. It's an idea.

I was just there, last weekend. Probably went to the same coin shop as you. All I know is that the building is the state capitol

Just a guess but maybe an avenue to follow up on is the Society Of Actuaries examination center locations. The exam patients are instructed to contact the receptionist desk for further instructions such as rooms, parking etc.

The following example was gotten online showing the instructions for this University....

Charlotte NC
Exams: MFE, MLC
University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Department of Mathematics and Stats
9201 University City Blvd
Room 319 Fretwell Building
Charlotte, NC 28223
Parking available in visiting parking East Deck,
enter main entrance on University City Blvd.,
proceed to the right; we will provide a parking token
during exam
