Came across this little piece a few days ago amongst some othr early milled low grade French coins I had bought.

I noticed a Lis countermark quite prominently on the coin, looked it up and it appears to relate to an edict of 1692 that meant worn french coinage could be counterstamped in this way and sent for use on the North American colony, between 1692 -97. Quite a nice and interesting early colonial coin if I am correct. Picture is below. Am I correct in my opinion? Also any ideas on value? I have found similar pieces fetch anything from $80 - 400 in various sales records. Thanks!

I've never seen that before. Most Nouvelle France coins are quite nicely struck.

Here is a link to some from a Stacks sale http://www.stacks.com/Lot/Browse/52...cationId=145 - lot's 5012 - 5018 are the most similar. Though the coin is not in great shape, as most in the catalogue are not, the counterstamp is nice and clear

I would say it was a Candian coin from the French regime. I use to pick these up these billon coins for $10 now you see some sell around $100-$200

I would not be surprised if the coin itself was struck on another coin- Bingo- Charlton says- "Beginning in 1692 and continuing through 1698, a new issue of sols marques was made. The design was new, but instead of being struck on fresh blanks, many were struck over previous issues of sols. It is sometimes possible to detect parts of the undertypes on the overstruck coins. The new issue was rated at 15 deniers when it came out."
Also, "In 1640 the French Government called in all douzains and counterstamped them with a small fleur-de-lis in an oval to change their rating to 15 deniers. The term sol marque (marked sol) came from the fact that these coins were counterstamped. It later came to apply to all sols. "

So, putting it all together- a coin struck before 1640, counterstamped with the fleur-de-lis in 1640, restruck in 1692-1698 with another design, showing parts of both of the older designs. Nice. The coin was valued originally at 12 deniers, raised in 1640 to 15 deniers, and it kept this value past 1698.
