Just received a 2010 silver 25ΒΆ proof set which is missing the Mount Hood coin. Is this considered an error?

If this is from the secondary market, contact the person right away.
If it came from the mint, you can easily send it back for a replacement. If you could take coins from a set and sell them off as "errors", Everyone would be doing this!

Thanks for the help. Didn't know if the holder would show damage if opened. I've got a lot of proof sets, but never tried to open one. This was from the mint, but would rather have 5 coins than 4.

the set missing the coin wouldn't bring any premium it would actually make it worth less because there would be no way to prove it came that way from the mint. The mint may even give you some hassle about it being missing like thinking you thought it was a PF-70 and took that one coin out and returned the rest you thought were lesser grades. Please let us know how this turns out. I hope they will not give you any trouble but I can see where they may

Unfortunately the lenses the mint currently uses for proof sets can be opened without leaving any trace. All they would have to do to stop this is use a couple strips of hologram tape (like on many CD/DVD movies and software) but so far they have not taken that step. Certainly with the recent price increases (which are unwarranted according to the information in the Mint's own annual reports) they have room in their margin to pay for this important consumer protection item.

Thanks again. I contacted the mint return dept., They said there was a 7 day return policy, and while they can't guarantee a replacement, it wouldn't hurt to try. Kind of weird, but I can understand it. I'll let you know what happens.

The mint used to have a 30 day return window but once they started weekly price fixing on precious metal coins they changed the policy to 7 days to prevent people from returning coins when the price of PMs dropped (if that ever happens). To me, there is a difference between returning for credit and simply asking the mint to give you what you paid for. Unfortunately, in their antiquated system, there is no way for them to send out the one coin you are missing. They have to have you send the problem set back and then send you a replacement. While they are usually pretty good about such things, it is a hassle to go through all of the steps to get something that never should have been sent out in the first place made right.

I did send the whole set back with insurance. Worst case, hopefully, is I get the original 4 coin set returned. In that case, I'll stick a polished washer in the open hole for a truly unique conversation piece. Thanks for your input.
