Jaymon: I agree with everyone else that this is a common "no cents" 1883 V nickel. No biggie though, overpaying by a couple bucks is nothing, and is wll worth it for the knowlege you obtain both from members on the forum and from your own investigation.

Quote: So I'm guessing that this book is missing illustrations? It mentions nothing of "cents" for this year either. So basically I'm more confused than I started I do not have a krauss book to tell you what you are looking at but its definitely not the circulated type, it has to be patterns since the design on the coins that circulated are exactly the same as the one you posted, the design on the Obverse didn't change, and the only difference in the Reverse is the word "cents" was added. If you follow the link of the ebay auction I posted you will see what the 1883 with cents looks like. We have a Moderator in here that has a krauss book but he is from Australia so his time zone is allot different than ours in the states so it will be real early before he will be posting but I will give him a heads up about this topic so he can tell us what you are looking at and maybe help you understand what ever it is you do not understand by the information given to you already. The only conclusion I can come to without seeing the book is that it is missing the information about the circulated versions of this coin and only covers the patterns since it has gotten you so confused by what should be rather simple if it would have covered the whole series instead of just the patterns so you could see what we were talking about instead of us just telling you. I will say this, I would get a RedBook before buying very many US coins because if its missing information like this you will end up making some huge mistakes and the RedBook isn't expensive and well worth the money you pay for it, its allot cheaper than what I think the kraus book costs and if you are going to be buying anymore US coins I would get one before going by the information you already have, even if you have to come to the forum and ask us before you buy, it will be better than spending way to much for a coin that isn't worth what you paid. This one was a cheap lesson, it could have been allot worse

I'd probably be wise not to mention the two Half-dimes that I also purchased today and can't find in the book. An 1849 and a 1853 O. Don't worry, I didn't pay but $1.00 for each.

Bryan1315, I went to the link for the E-Bay coin. I see what you're talking about. That is a Beauty!

Don't worry, I didn't pay but $1.00 for each. I think you did well on those probably, I will tell SAP about this since he has the kraus book I think and let him give you some more information about what you are looking at in the book you have

That would be awesome Bryan1315. I will buy the RedBook before venturing out again. Lesson learned.

Jaymon74, I'm looking in my Krause, 1801-1900, 4th ed, so the pages are probably different, but you are in the pattern section (page 1235) and you need to go back to the regular coinage section, page 1189.

I emailed the link to SAP because I didn't know anyone else that had a krause book but it seems the information I wanted him to give you has already been given. Thanks jgfindring, I didn't know anyone but SAP that had these books, does it show the No Cents and the With Cents in the book in the regular coinage section? I have to say, I wish everyone would make no more than a $5.00 mistake when dealing with coins they aren't familiar with but sadly thats not the case, most people loose much more before they learn their lesson

You did fine Jaymon74. You simply paid high retail for it...no biggie! Look at it this way...at least you only thought it was worth big bucks. You didn't actually pay big bucks for it!
