Anyone know a good place to find information on this one? I've found this page on the artist (no mention of this plaquette) but none others: http://www.austriancoins.com/prinz.html

The legend across the bottom is DER TOD ALS SCHNITTER - roughly, Death as the Grim Reaper (German). If anyone knows a better translation, please holler.

Thanks for any information!

Issued in Vienna after World War I presumely at the floodings of 1920 (hochwasser) as a remembrence token that the floodings of the Danube region (Remember Catrina at Louisiana?) have occured. These tokens were sold for the HOCHWASSERHILFE and the money for it went to the relief fund.

Thank you, that's great info! Are they walking through the water in the engraving, then?

Every grain laying at the ground is an immortal soul, so they are walking among a sea of souls.

That's.. deep. And worthy of a moment of reflection (or two).

Thank you.

Sad subject aside, that's a nice piece of period art.

That is truly a beautiful and interesting piece. It really captures the essence of tragedy well.

But, I still can't help but say that it's a little creepy.

For some reason I'm not creeped out, there's so much expression and emotion in the face, body posture, the way they hold hands ...
