Any help with details on this coin? It's another from my step-fathers collection.

Thanks.

Elmer

Ah, the "Fat Man Dollar", possibly one of the most frequently counterfeited coins in the world.
Here's when it came up recently on the forum.

Well, I guess, before dismissing it as a fake, check the specs,
weight 26.4 g (it should be 89% silver), diameter 38 mm. I'm not sure what the thickness of the genuine coin should be. (I have three, all fakes).

It appears to only weigh 20 grams.... I am using a not so fancy kitchen scale for this and each time I weigh it it's different. between 14-20 grams.

It IS possible to get maximum performance out of any weighing device.

You say you were using kitchen scales. What is the weight range of the scales?
Say for instance it is 0 to 5 kg. (0 to 5000 grammes) I gave the range in grammes here, because you have indicated that the coin weighs about 20 grammes.

If that is the case, work the scales in area of about 2500 grammes. Start by putting a known accurate weight on the scales, that has a weight of in the range of say 1500 to 4000 grammes, it can be any weight as long it is in the practical mid range of the scales. That is the range where the scales are designed to be most accurate and reliable.

Get 10 readings of this weight, delete the highest and lowest reading, and average the 8 remaining readings.

Do the same with this weight with the coin added to the load, and use the same procedure with the 10 readings you get (with coin added).

Subtract the smaller average weight from the higher average weight.

That should give you a more accurate weight value for your coin.
