i went to my my dump bank and the teller asks me do you really find anything I told her I do find some silver. She went on to tell me that the gal from brinks that picks up there coinage searches the bags and pulls out the silver also. Very interesting

I wonder if we will be having this same conversation in 10 years about copper pennies?

Its not worth getting boxes of half dollars....at least not around here....the gals at brinks are not coin collectors,but....they do grab all the silver!

Quote: I still think silver searching is not worth the time unless you get one of those rolls that 50% of the coins are silver...Just basing this on how much you can make an hour vs how much silver you find and how long it takes. I would have to disagree on this point. Casually, one could go through $1k in little over an hour. Doing quickly, at least $2k/hr. Even if you pull 3 40% halves out of $2k worth in an hour, at today's spot prices, you still made over minimum wage. And that's assuming little more than one-tenth of one percent silver. My most recent box ($500) was gone through in half an hour (in the car with the wife driving) while running around town doing errands. It produced only 3 40% silver halves, but they each sold for over $5 each, shipped. After postage and fees, for less than an hour's work, that's not bad at all.

How did you sell 40% at $5?

Well, the bank I get my halves from has a coin counter, and when the bag in there fills up, they run it through their rolling machine and put it in the vault. It never goes through the armoured car companies or anything!

one thing is for sure:
now more than ever people are more aware of what coins contain silver. at just about every bank I hit there is at least one teller that picks out some silver and knows about it. anyone that has ever worked before knows that if one of their fellow co-workers is looking for something, his co-workers help them out. ALSO, the fact that the prices have run up so much, anyone that has caught wind that these 90% can fetch $10 a piece are all over that. wouldnt youif you worked a bank? not to mention there is "downtime", so I hear

SD, you are oh-so-right about that "down time". My wife works at a CU as a loan officer, although her duties include teller. Her ear is trained for that 'clink-clink' sound. Nothing makes it past those girls, you better believe it! She does bring home the bacon at times.

that's why I like soft money. those small portrait things that tellers don't want to hang on to, or find out the value of.
Although I do still nickel and cent hunt, finding a teller that will watch out for an call you about the bills is a treasure indeed.

Quote: How did you sell 40% at $5? Surprisingly, buyers on ebay are really going silver crazy these days. The actual prices were from $3.50-$3.85, by selling the junk individually. We have all been reading for the longest time now all of the doom & gloom, apocalyptic ravings about how silver is undervalued and the gold:silver ratio will correct itself bringing silver up to $70/oz (instead of gold coming down to $600/oz). Now, if such things are debatable amongst investors and collectors, imagine how the general public must think of it. Fear drives people. Add in the rantings about the monetary system and its pending collapse, and people are going to be looking for a way out. In comes "junk" silver. People find out that coins that can be obtained for free from the bank have this precious silver in it. They begin grabbing rolls whenever they become available, painstakingly removing all of the coins that contain silver, and start hoarding them. Soon, the quantities of silver begin to dwindle as predictions of silver shortages and China and government confiscations begin to waft in the winds of rumor. So now, we have the current arena in "junk" silver we have today where individual 40% junk can sale for over $5 shipped. It's a crazy world out there!

You are right about enjoying it and getting little treasures. And if that's what you guys are for than more power too you! I can't do it, but I think it's because I had a failed eye surgery a few years back (DON'T GET PRK SURGERY!!) and looking through that loop for any period of time gets me a head ache.
For me I can search for copper or silver and that's about it. I really enjoy going to a show and looking closely at a coin or ten, but I can't do the boxes.
I am finding more enjoyment out of just buying about 10 rolls of whatever it may be and going through them 2 here and 2 there. I'm hoping that this will allow me to further enjoy the hobby.

Woo Hoo! As always, when I go to the bank, I ask if they have any rolls of halves. They didn't this time, but between all the tellers, only had 3 coins. I ended up picking up one 90% and a 1968 and 69 40%! I'm so happy. It's been awhile since I've found anything. Not a bad deal for $1.50.
