Hi Everyone,

I'm just starting to learn this hobby after getting some cool gold coins (at least I think they are) last Christmas and I would like to know if they are worth being graded or not. Here's my list:

1904 $20 Liberty Head
(2) 1975 1 oz. Krugerrands
100 Korona
1851 Type 1 dollar gold
50 Mexican Pesos

I brought them to a local jewelry/coin exchange to be appraised if they are real gold coins and the appraiser verified they are and he priced my coins a little lower than the gold's spot price. When I asked him if they are worth to be graded, he said that it might not be worth having them graded because the benefit will not outweigh the cost and hassle. I'm feeling that he is only basing his judgment on the gold value of the coins and not their numismatic value. Below is a pic of the $20 coin (I hope the pic shows up)

I would appreciate any advice.

Hi, chuckpb. Welcome to the forum.

The Krugerrands and (probably) 100 Korona & 50 Pesos are bullion coins which generally don't have added numismatic value.Depending on date the 50 Pesos could be an exception; I'm not really knowledgeable of them.

The Double Eagle pictured is fairly common, and not worth a whole heck of a lot above melt unless it hasn't seen circulation. Your pics are a bit small for conclusive analysis, but it looks like the coin is barely circulated at worst and likely Mint State. Very likely worth having graded, especially since you don't have much invested in it.

The Gold Dollar carries value well above melt in any grade. At $45/gm its' melt value is around $65; even in low graded condition it's worth well over $100. Mint State examples start at $300-ish.

@SuperDave - thanks for the input. I added an obverse pic to show some details on the Double Eagle, but somehow I could not upload a bigger picture than 90kb.

The double eagle looks like it would grade AU, with a bit of rub in the fields and some wear on the hair at the top of Liberty's head. Unless it were more obviously mint state I would not invest the fee for grading. The gold dollar might be worth a look; can you post images?

Congrats on the new acquisitions. Those are some mighty handsome Christmas presents!

I will try to post a pic of the $1 Lib tomorrow when I get a better lighting set up. I'm still trying to learn taking better coin pics through the discussions in this forum. I appreciate all the comments so far, and would hope to get more insights as I post more pictures. Thanks.
