I recently was given a antique metal elephant that turned out to have a secret compartment that held a 1946 and 1964 half dollar. They both seem to be in excellent condition. They were wrapped in cotton and barely have a mark on them. I am very new to this and know very little. I've done some research but I'm still not sure about a lot of things. There are no marks on either coin to tell me were they were made. Is this good or bad? I would be grateful for any help.

Pics are always good to post if you have a dig camera or even a scanner. Scanner pics are very difficult to grade or to determine the grade as it were. Very nice finds! Both are Silver and both were minted in Philadelphia. A "D" mint would be Denver and an "S" would be San Francisco, no mint mark is Phillie. If you can post pics then we can give you an idea about grade and perhaps current market value (estimate).

When handling the coins, only hold them by their rims. My advice would be to go to a local coin dealer, if possible, and purchase what are called "Air Tites" and carefully put the coins into them for safer keeping.

Hi LYDDIEDID

Welcome !!

The mint mark for the 1946 can be found at about 7 o clock on the back of the coin, they are pretty small,, if your coin does not have a mint mark then it was minted in philadelphia,,

The 1964 will have the mint mark on the Reverse of the coin above the A in the word half,, same thing no mint mark is a philadelphia minted coin.

as for value ? can you post pics ? condition is everything !! and I hesitate to value a coin based on a description.
