Just bought a can from my Canadian hardware store and was informed that there will be NO more acetone for sell by the end of the year, due to the chemicals that are used in it. So stock up if you use it.

That might be in Canada only but acetone is dangerous and should be used with caution by adults only. Acetone and acetone fumes should be considered toxic and never used around open flames including natural gas ranges, stoves, water heaters, or furnaces.

When you're storing them, just keep them next to the hot water heater in the basement ;)
Or maybe better would be outside in the shed away from the house

I'm wondering if anybody ever tried MEK ? I used it or acetone for cleaning parts before painting and it seemed like the MEK left less residue (powder coat stuck better).

MEK is OK to use. It is non reactive to nearly all metals, however don't spill it on anything! It will eat the finish off your flooring in about 5.97 nanoseconds and melt a hole through linoleum in about twice the time. It has an even stronger odor than acetone too. Use it outside if you do use it.

Tim...it sounds like you speak from experience...made me laugh...but thanks for the info and yes it stays out in the garage...I'd never hear the end of it if I brought it inside.Luckily, I have a conditioned garage for all my experiments. jbuck...I guess I could have done a search as I alway suggest that to others...thanks !

If your worried about that, post your needs on some of the many web sites that sell almost anything. Yes you may find in some places items like Acetone is no longer on store shelves but niether are all the drugs people buy over the internet. Odd info though since so many drugs are available from Canada via the internet and not approved for sale in the USA. And it's not just Canada. Neighbors of mine used to tell me of wonder drugs for fighting Cancer from Mexico if I wanted to try some they would have them sent here. I would suspect if you tried you could have a thousand gallons of Acetone delivered to you from one of those odd web sites. Might be able to start your own illigal stuff store in Canada. That is an odd thing since in almost any Kmart, Walmart, Sears or any stores in the USA, the paint department has enough flamable items to really make a mess. Same with every hardware and paint store in this area. In a store near me called Menards, there is an entire aisle full of almost every dangerous chemical for usage in painting, concrete stripping, etc.

Can you back-up this with a regulation change in Canadian law? I can't even imagine this is true for the entire country. Acetone has been available to consumers forever. How will Candian women remove their fingernail polish? LOL

WOW and with that I figure several million Women will start massive, violent revolts in Canada. You can mess with peoples cars, their hobbies, their wallets but don't, don't and I mean DON'T mess with Womens beauty products.
