I have got interested in roll searching lately, and have been wondering if there are some modern coins worth saving. I am trying my luck with halfs right now, but I am thinking of going to nickels or dimes.

Any suggestions about books, or websites to research?

Well, you are on a great website for information for starters. Second, do you have the Red Book already? That would be my first suggestion since it would give you a general overview of old and modern coins.

That depends on what your are looking for Scott W. I have the 2nd edition of "Strike it Rich" by Brian Allen & Ken Potter. It has alot of the modern error coins in it for cents through dollars. It also has alot of information on different errors, with picturs of the coins that they have listed.

Some kind of rollhunting " CherryPickers' Guide" would be ideal for you. Sorry that I can't think of any specific authors. Check out your area's largest bookstore and see what they have.

I agree with the other posters.

First, get yourself a copy of A Guide Book of United States Coins, K. Bressett, Editor; Whitman Publishing. This is "The Rd Book". It provides some very good general information about US coins.

Then, get yourself a copy of Strike It Rich With Pocket Change, Ken Potter and Brian Allen, published by Krause Publications. It will give you more specific information on errors.

Both of these books are inexpensive, and can be found either on-line or at your local bookstore.

Also try the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins, (Bill Fivaz, J. T. stanton, also from Whitman Publishing). there are two volumes, choose the one that matches the coins you are searching. A little more expensive than the other two books.

As already noted the Red Book by Whitman Publishing is a great start. In the 2011 edition, pages 404 and up there is some pretty good examples of error coins. Page 407 gives some approximate values of those. And for pennies, cents, there is that https://www.coppercoins.com for all types of those coins.
If you can find and go to a coin show you may find all sorts of coin books. One coin show by me always has a dealer with an entire table full of coin books of every type imaginable. For the vest values on line for those books you may want to check out the Walmart Book web sites.

Check out "The 100 Greatest U.S. Coins". Great coins, great pictures, and very informative. Well worth it.
