look on the bright side you get 200 ebat bucks!!!

On a serious note though, its overpriced in my opinion as I never bought over face for copper cents besides indian and wheats but for bullion I would rather just find them. Thats a huge amount of pennies you never know what may be in that baby, maybe a nice 1909 s vbd

coppertop...do a completed listing for "$100 FV copper"...my auction is the only one that comes up under completed listings...then try 95% copper...and keep in mind that the larger amounts are the ones selling and/or bringing the best returns......you may be watching , but you need to learn what to watch

Quote:
Its only illegal to export with the " intent to be melted by a american citzen" You can export and sell all you want after they are sold the person in the other country that person is not a us citzen can do as they please

Do you just make this stuff up as you type or do you think about it first There is not a single bit of truth to any of that, "intent" is irrelevant. The melt ban limits the export of coins as well, $5 limit for travelers and shipment of up to $100 for legitimate coinage and numismatic purposes.

biokem, read the etire article

if you dont know about the regulations then your intent was not to break the law
hence if you did not know it was illegal to export and sell , then you wont break the law
read this part

" The new regulations authorize a fine of not more than $10,000, or imprisonment of not more than five years, or both, against a person who knowingly violates the regulations. In addition, by law, any coins exported, melted, or treated in violation of the regulation shall be forfeited to the United States Government. "

thats my whole point , if someone comes from canada is not a us citzen and buys them exports them
the seller in the usa did no wrong. He simply sold cents to a buyer. The nonamerican citzen took them out of the usa and melted them.
being the " travler " does not know about the limit allowed
he " did not intend to break the law "

why would a candian know about us regulation, is there a sign posted at the usa canadian border ?

Coppertop, if you think a non-American citizen can break our laws and just claim "I didn't know" and get away with it you're as dumb as you sound.

if he " did not knowing do so "
read the regulation.

It even says a fine or punishment by people that " knownly violate the regulation "
dont know the regulation cant break the regulation

I don't see a candian law that its illegal to melt forgien currency , nor import amounts above 5$ in pennys

Sorry, but you're an idiot.

"Your honor, I'm sorry but I didn't know it was illegal."

"Oh OK, case dismissed then"

In legal terms it's called "mens rea." It says in the statute "knowingly violates the regulations." Ignorance is never a defense but it seems like in this case it is. However, I think the reason the gov't put that in there is so that they can let little guys go. They don't want the guy who is melting a few hundred pennies in his garage. They want the guy who has made a business out of it and is melting 10s of thousands of pennies. Just my thought.

scub read the regulations,

if you get cuaght once and informed the second time it will be enforced

the city of tampa had " water regulations " last year I broke them
did not know watering was one day a week instead of two , what I told the city and avoided the 500$ fine
they told me now you know do it agian and pay 500$

being I did not know I did not get fined.

If THEY CATCH YOU MELTING its illegal . If they catch you exporting 25 million cents
they will tell you YOU CANT DO IT , then you simply cant . You wont get jail time if you say you did not know.

thanks RUSS

i could not think of the legal term .

" knownly " is the key word

You know = illegal
cuaght trying to export the first time did not know = stopped warned
try second time get cuaght = illegal

besides your not exporting , your reselling to a non citzen that is not aware or the export laws, as long as he does not violate his own coutries laws he is o.k

The point of the statute seems to be "little guy" you are ok. Big guy melting tons of pennies you are guilty per se. It's like DWI laws. Pulled over and you blow 0.08, you are drunk per se. Regardless of your driving abilities.
