Hi everyone,

Before I begin, it should be mentioned, that I had been an avid collector of Canadian and US coins for over 25 years.

Several years ago, while browsing a local flea market, I stumbled upon the following coin.

My-First-Ancient-Coin-And-The-Lessons-I-Learned.

My-First-Ancient-Coin-And-The-Lessons-I-Learned.

Intrigued, I inquired as to it's price. I believe the response was $20. This would be my first ancient coin.

I brought the coin home and commenced upon the research. After a couple of hours I determined my prize was a Marc Antony's Battle of Actium struck 31 BC. Wow, what a find! Not to mention, the amazing story of the assassination of Caesar in 44 BC. The rise of Octavian, soon to be Augustus Caesar, the first Emperor of Rome. The tragic demise of Marc Antony and Cleopatra. I was hooked!

My next step was to bring my new acquisition to my local coin shop.

"Hey Sean", I trumpeted. "Look what I found!"

After looking at my coin for a couple of minutes he handed it back and stated, with a smirk, "It's a copy".

"A copy", I responded. "How do you know?".

"Well", he replied. "It's stamped COPY. Look below the battle ship."

Man, we laughed!

Was the lesson worth $20?

You bet!

I hear ya!! Funny what a couple of bucks can do, some excitement, and a few hours... You'll never forget what you learned that day for the rest of your life... Speaking of first ancient coins, I am overtaking my fathers collection of 40 some years... I have watched him over my life and know the basics plus my own endevours. My lastest crave is to know and inventory his ancients... What was your solid source of info for the ancients? Seems very hard to come by, and byy amount, I feel I will die prior to understanding where and what ever coinn in the ancients he had? Also, being new to potentially selling some extra coinage and bullion I have, what have you or your buddies been doing to sell your coins when wanting. I hate the ebay rush rush feel... Craigslist is way too unprofessional. I would rather put a few coins a week perhaps on some forum/auction website where not only can an auction take place but professional and intellectual converstation can come from the listing rather than battle of the dollars? Any pointers? Are there websites that offer such a thing without the 12 percent cut you take from ebay and such? Sorry for rambling?

Thanks

PS I admired the story casue I did the same thing with an old colonial!!

My opinion of ebay is one sided. I purchase from ebay but have abandoned selling. Between ebay and PayPal fees, shipping costs and the risk involved, no more.

Be careful. Don't purchase from China. There are far to many fakes coming from Asian countries for my liking. For a country that is so oppressive politically it's amazing how much illegal activity.

I only purchase from Canada, US and UK.

Read the feedback. Negatives and neutrals can establish a pattern.

Once you have purchased from a ebay seller, and are pleased, send an email inquiring if they have more items. You may be surprised at the great deals you can swing.

Most importantly, find a local coin dealer or coin club. I have been dealing with Sean Issacs from Alliance Coin and Bank note in Almonte Ontario Canada for years. Great guy and real trust worthy. I have purchased 50% of my collection from his shop.

Lastly, have fun. That's really what it's all about.
