What you have here is the bank of England counterstamp.
Can you post a picture of the coins edge ?

"In 1797 Bank of England notes were made inconvertible and remained so for the duration of the Napoleonic Wars.
That same year, because of a desperate shortage of silver coins, half a million pounds worth of Spanish dollars issued by Charles IV were overstamped with a small engraving of George III, resulting in the popular description of "the head of a fool stamped on the neck of a butt."
A more successful issue of Spanish coins with their designs completely erased and replaced by the words "Bank of England Five Shilling Dollars" was made in 1804."

If this piece is authentic it's a really neat one!

According to the Krause:
KM# 634 Dollar (5 shillings), oval CM on Mexico 8 reales 1791-1808
VG $65, F $100, VF $250, XF $450.

According to the Coincraft:
Dollar, oval CM on Mexico 8 reales (regardless of the date on the host coin)
F £90, VF £160, EF £300.

Hello Mathieuma,
I try to capture photo of the edge (when the sun is out) & post it.
The edge is tarnished dark so need light to see it properly.
Thanks

Bamboo The coin is certainly good looking - it is NOT a Birmingham forgery. The puncheon of George III also looks far better than most fakes so you may have an original.

There area actually two possibilities here - Numismatic Forgery or Original. That is because the coin looks "correct". It matches the pattern of the originals exactly.

As suggested, seeing the edge design would help. Also the weight and perhaps the Specific Gravity could determine if the host is real.

OK, maybe I am just loosing my mind here.......but does the picture of the coin (dated side), and the close up of the c/s look like a negative and a positive image? In other words, that does not look like a close-up of the c/s on the coin, it almost looks like a mold of the coin. Does that make and sense?

Don't worry odentheviking. I will post the photo of the coin taken with a laboratory macro lens camera. This photo is taken with a handycam.
Thanks everyone for suggestion/comments.
Swamperbob, I will post edge & weight later.

I had this illusion at first too. It's just lighting issue. When Bamboo was taking a close-up pic he blocked quite a bit of light so it looks extra shadowy.

Pls have a look at the rough area / pockmarked area around the nose.
Should I be concerned?

Can you indicate where the edge pictures were taken in relation to one face of the coin? Also were they all taken with the same side facing upward?

I am trying to orient the coin to determine edging priority.

There are clearly two edge die applications - but they seem to run side to side too much (indicating no retaining lip on the dies) and some of the segments do not seem to be the correct shape.

Photo Edge No.1 & No.4 is the same taken at the same part ( one is the upside down of the other)
Pattern of photo 1 & 4 occurred at the edge of "L" (CAROLUS).
Opposite side (turn 180 degrees)"between G & R" (GRATIA) is pattern full round, full rectangle, combination of half rectangle half round , full round.
I will post photo later with all the edges facing on one direction.
Thanks for your comment.
