Ok, I have followed this coin on Heritage, and LOVED it, then I missed the chance to acquire it on ebay. Even though it's only a G-4, it has awesome toning and is strong for the grade. Well it came back on the bay again: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITI could get potentially get the funds together, BUT, the seller is asking a pretty high premium on his starting bid. No G-4 should sell for $3500 in this market(actually it would be more like 3400 with all the ebay bucks). I'd be all over it at 3K. I may still be tempted, but it would be more of an emotional purchase for me. My usual route is "bang for the buck", and since I've never spent close to that on a coin, I wanted to get some forum opinions. Is it deserving of that kind of premium? Here are some better pictures of it. Edited by johnny54321 01/11/2011 03:09 am

Sometimes we have to go with our emotions. I love the brown toning...it was a brown 17-D that got me started on SLQ's.

Quote: I'd be all over it at 3K. You could always e-mail him and make him a offer, all he can say is no. I also like the toning, a little out of my price range though. Good luck to ya.

I'd wait until the auction is down to about 23 hours, then let him know how much you'd pay if it doesn't sell. My offers get accepted about 20% of the time, and another 30% of the time, they give a counter offer that I accept. They blow me off the other 50% of the time.

I like the idea of making him an offer. The worst thing they could do is tell you no. Either that, or just wait for another one to pop up. It certainly has very nice eye appeal for the grade IMO.

Wow - that's really pretty for a G4. Shows all of the details clearly to verify it's a 1916 and has beautiful toning too - perfect for your set.. You said you've followed it on heritage and ebay before too -- so you know the cost that he paid for it. I'd be tempted to go $250 or so over that price in an offer. But like robbudo said.. wait until the auction is almost over - that way you'll have a better chance assuming that no on has bid on it. The worst case is he blows you off and the coin doesn't sell (well, almost worst case - worst case is it sells).. If it doesn't sell now -- don't you think he'd still be willing to negotiate after the auction is over? He obviously wants to flip the coin for a profit considering the high starting price. I think this is one of those coins where technical grading and "the look" of the coin don't match up. I'd be okay with going over retail on a coin like this.

It's a nice coin and I'd be happy to own it, but the seller has gone a bit overboard by describing it as a "full four digit date"...

That's G6 money. You said yourself, it's an emotional purchase for you - "emotional purchase" and "three thousand dollars" should not appear in the same sentence.
1916's don't exactly grow on trees, but they're not unknown either. You know what the seller paid, right? Can you throw him an offer that will let him turn a profit while keeping the price more in line with reality? If so, do it.
If not, there will be another one.

Thanks guys. I did tell him that I'd be interested at 3K when he first put the auction up, but he didnt respond. Maybe I should have waited until it was almost over...lol. But yeah, it actually only sold for $2760 on Heritage(GRR); so 3K or $3100 max should be a very fair offer in this market.

Well, the seller responded. He sounds like a really nice guy, but he won't budge on the price. Maybe he will change his mind, but for now I am going to pass.

Just remember that if he got it from Heritage, he paid at least 15% buyers premium

I like it. Nice eye appeal and you can still make out the date. I've made offers before to sellers on ebay and threw a number out there and they accepted. There are some deals to be had right now.

Well...it's early yet so it's not surprising he doesn't want to budge, which is certainly his right. Here's another idea...just keep watching the auction. If it doesn't sell, chances are good he'll relist it, thereby racking up more ebay fees. A couple of times doing that and racking up ebay fees for unsuccessful auctions may soften him up a bit. He might then be a little more willing to negotiate.

Yeah. You guys are right though that it is perfect for my set, especially since I LOVE color in my set and I LOVE the 1916(as if you all havent noticed yet)...;-). I've never seen a circ 1916 with color like this, period. The details are stronger than your average G4. I wont bid on it this time around, but I will cwbs advice and probably pester him about it for a while since this is kind of a unique coin...lol.

I agree with contacting the seller with an offer. Low ball him for minus $500 what you think its worth and maybe he'll come back with something. Or, like robbudo, you'll get shot down. haha
