Quote: Those sizes fall into a correct category. There is an 8.8mm punch listed with a 6mm crown. That size combination is found ONLY in the YII stamps but is common there The specimen above is an example of a contemporary counterfeit YII counterstamped coin on an 8 reales Pillar dollar. All of its features edges, overlaps, silver content based on its wet weight and other indication of a genuine 8 reales are present on this specimen. Most collectors/numismatists here in the philippines were divided on this one. Some says it's genuine, others says fake. In fact, specimen of this kind was raised in our last year conversation with the maestro of philippine counterstamped coins (author of the book about CS) and indeed declared it to be an old counterfeit. Prices may vary depending on its completeness of the crown but not to exceed $300 as of todate. Quote: However note that the counterstamp is being added after the coin is made so now we need a marker for the counterstamp itself jfransch: To give you some idea that may be used for your future reference is my document file taken from an old book, you will notice the specimen above falls under F-11 (sample of crown - uneven Y.II.)

Thanks for all the info pandesalapi, swamperbob, jfransch and chops. I'm really learning a lot here. I returned the coin to the seller after knowing that its a fake. He gave me a full refund. Yes chops I was the one who bought the coin in ebay philippines for $300 Anyway I changed to collecting mini liquor bottles after the fake purchase thats why it took me a while to reply but know I'm again starting to take interest in collecting coins. I just bought a new digital weighing scale and a book by aldo basso. been reading it for a while now. Will be visiting a library next week to read another book about counterstamped coins by Oropilla Fortich. Thanks to you guys I understand now that collecting coins entails extensive reading and knowledge. My father (I'm only 23) has been collecting coins for a while now, I have concerns in some of his coins so I'll appreciate it greatly if you experts can again give your opinions Hopefully I can post pictures of some of his coins in the coming days. Looking forward to learning again from you guys.

Beriner1 Twenty three - huh - I have socks that are older than that. But all kidding aside, it is great that you have learned your lesson about STUDYING BEFORE you buy. My favorite quote, which I have framed and hanging on my office wall is one that comes from Aaron R. Feldman a coin dealer in NYC from the 1950s. He said Quote: BUY THE BOOK BEFORE THE COIN That has never been more true than right now. The price of silver is bringing out the old counterfeits in large numbers. What FUN! But then again not many of us collect fakes. So if anyone is ever stuck with any of the COUNTERFEIT YII counterstamps and wants to sell them at least as a partial write off just write.

Quote: BUY THE BOOK BEFORE THE COIN 100% and in case you may want to buy the book I can give you the contact number of no less than the author (Dr. Oropilla ) himself so that you can buy direct from him. It's really a treasure to own a book with the author's dedication on it.

Pandesalapi I would appreciate the contact data for the book that lists known counterfeit countermarks. You are never too old to learn.

Well said Swamperbob! Guess I had to learn it the hard way. Good thing I was able to return the coin. I'm still not earning that much to blow $300 on a fake coin. Hi Pandesalapi! Thanks a lot! It will be great if you could give me Dr. Oropilla's number. I'm sure it will be a grand experience to meet the author in the flesh! Thanks a lot experts for all the help!

Quote: Edited by staff - be careful with email addresses - spammers love them! oops sorry... you may otherwise google dr.oropilla and you will be able to check the author and his book. swamperbob: It's around $100 plus shipping fee being posted through internet. Though at the time I acquired it, he gave me a discounted price plus of course his handwritten dedication to include the nice coffee treat It a big hardbound book, a lot bigger than the normal book that we see. 9"x 12" and 1" thick from cover to cover. It's all about how these counterstamps were made, its total mintages supported by the archival docs, receipts paid by the Spanish Gov't in the Philippines at the time, billings of the assayer, Spanish decree/order to produce said CS and many more. In other words, one of the best book I have read and still reading back and fourth, until to date...
