I imagine much was melted down circa 1980 during the Hunt Bros era, but does anyone here have any idea how much pre-1965 US silver coins (ie. junk) is left? 50%?... 25%?... 10%?

If you don't know, I still would like to hear your best guesses.

Thanks.

Obviously, no one can know this for certain. I would imagine probably 70-80% still remains. They made alot of silver coins before 1965. Maybe some of the older forum members can shed a better guess than I can.

no one kept any records of how many were melted in the early 70's and 80's. There were allot melted and I have heard horror stories of dealers shipping Morgans by the bags and the way they talked I am not talking one bag at a time, they say they would ship 100 bags at a time. Now just think, there are 1000 Morgans in a bag times that by 100 that is a whole lot of Morgans in each shipment and this wasn't the only shipment they sent. Some would have shipments once or twice a week. There are still allot of them out there but allot of them were definitely melted when silver was $30-$50 an ounce back then

This has been discussed more than once and I'm not sure anybody actually knows. The one thing I'm thinking is that you can still buy common dates for melt/spot prices so apparently not enough have been melted to cause a shortage to collectors.
