To this forum. I suggest if you don't need money badly right now, become a coin collector. It's easy. Just save all those coins you already have. And too there are a lot of places to find the Red Book. Last time I looked even the Walmart book web site had them. Alsok check out if there are any local coin shows in your area. Great places to learn. Quote: I live around Raleigh, Bryan. How'd ya like the snow/ice?
In some ways your lucky. When the Weather people say your going to get snow, you do. Around Chicago they say flurries and you get a foot of snow or rain or the Sun comes out and it is 60degrees. We just had those flurries again yesterday and today supposed to get more but the Sun just came out.

So, I bought the red 2011 coin book, another on Morgans, and yet another on the Peace, a toner for my face... oh wait, never mind, and my husband is bringing home a mixed sized bunch of those cardboard coin holders. I thought those best for now as I will need to write ( in pencil,) notes, a guess grade, and worth as I go.Right? also found an old pair of cotton gloves. Later, I will read up on taking pictures and hopefully figure out how to post them... Wish me luck. I am also a writer, and if my editor catches me on here, I'm dead meat, LOL> I must force myself to do actual work at least 3 hours a day, then use this as my reward I suppose. New and exciting, y'all know how it goes I spect. This, has been great. I expect I'll be on several times a day for a while reading and learning from past posts. Thanks for all the info on here, and the questions answered personally. If any of you can think of something I should be specifically looking for, give a shout!

Sunny, from one writer to another, congrats on your learning attempts and efforts to preserve these coins. You're in the right place to learn just about everything you need to know about coin collecting, and the ten-year-old daughter analogy is valid, as you won't find "problem" posters here as you might elsewhere. When I fell into CCF a few years ago, I had no idea what I was in for, even though I had spasmodically collected coins since the '50's. Now I'm hooked, and I collect coins for their beauty and history, and maybe because I'm OCD enough that I think I have to fill in all those holes in my coin folders. Last, and that's dead last, I collect coins as an investment. You've come to the right place!

went to con guy. took a few things for him to look at, things that I was fairly sure I knew the value on. He offered me book price on my decent shape 1923 Peace dollars at 20 each.Offered same on an uncirculated one. ( NO.. I did not sell them). He offered 9 dollars for two kennedy halfs, one excellent, one discolored, both 1964. He was rude, took personal phone calls while waiting on me, and I was not forthcoming with the rest of the collection. I did buy plastic flips, about 3 dollars worth, and paid for them with 3 Ikes. The only thing I'll spend them on is stuff for the coins.and I have about 50 of them. I plan on saving one of each year and mint that I have. that leaves me about 40 to spend on coin stuff. Question, I have pennies ( wheat lincolns), which I plan to keep one of each and sell the rest. The coin man offered 2 cents a piece, what do you guys think?

A clean, dry place is where you would want to store coins of value - or any coin you want to protect. For coins of value there are coin flips and holders that can be bought at any coin shop for cheap.
If you take them to a dealer to have them evaluated or appraised, make it clear you are NOT selling them. Your screen name says you're in NC. If you're within reasonable driving distance to Fayetteville (just outside Fort Bragg) I would be happy to look at them and see if any are noteworthy.
And oh, yeah. Until you know what's valuable handle the coins by the edges.

First off - Don't go back to that guy. A guarentee you that there's a better coin shop out there. I don't know about all the coins you listed, but current melt value alone on the Kennedy half (1964 only) is about $10.xx each. As for the extra wheats you have, my suggestion is to go get a penny roll and put them in there. Unless you have a duplicate key or semi key date you wont make a ton of money off of them. Don't get me wrong, you can sell them individually and some might bring a few bucks. They will all bring more then 2c each though. However, that's a pretty average (slightly below) buying price on bulk wheats for a dealer.

One other thing that I don't remeber seeing mentioned, sorry if it has been. Don't expect to get what the RedBook actually lists as a price for your coins. That's more of a dealer's price guide. You can almost always expect to get less. The link originally posted is a much more realistic price guide. The RedBook is much much easier to navigate and get a general idea though.

ok, no selling anything for a while. and I won't go back to that guy. He was well... let's just say a bit full of himself without much in the way of buisness manners. Coinstar, after I get these coins back to bed I will be more than happy to tell where I live. Until then maybe not a good idea to announce where the newbie dumb kid lives, LOL. I ordered my books from Amazon, and now have to wait 5 days for them. I spent the evening reading about Bryan's Morgan find. Now that was a page turner.

Yeah, you definitely do not want to blurt out any personal information at all. Once you've had 50 quality posts, you'll have access to the PM'ing system here. (You'll be able to click on someone's name and send them an e-mail through the forum).
Stick around and learn what you can before you sell anything. Eventually, you could possibly sell some things here that will give you closer to fair value and by then you will know what you have and what you want. Plus, you'll know they are going to a loving home.
Best of both worlds!
