Looking through my variety references on Canadian coins, I note there are date position differences listed into the 1950s. So I wonder--do these date positions represent different hubs--or were 50c dies dated individually?

If you can shed light on this question, my thanks.

Thanks for that list--I have a few of those. My Charest book on varieties documents different date positions on the 50c into the 1950s. I specialize in die varieties from an earlier period when individual dies were dated. I'm intrigued by date variations this late on Canadian coins, but I don't know at what stage of the die-making process they originate.

For the 195* Fifty Cent coin Reverses

1. 1950 - as mentioned above, the date spacing is identical, the only difference is the design in the '0' which can be a full design or a half design or no design.
i.e. No die refinish, light die refinish or heavy die refinish.

2. For the 1951 and 1952, the last digit varies in position and is entered on each die...

3. For the 1953 Small Date, the last digit varies in position. For the 1953 Large Date and all succeeding dates, the digit positioning remains the same.

I guess I would be remiss if I didn't talkto the 194* Fifty Cent coin reverses...

The 1940 has all didgits identically positioned.

The 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948 (2 reverses) and 1949 have multiple date spacings... it appears that they are entered by die....

The "Hearing Aid" variety can be found on almost all years for the Fifty Cents of the George VI era. They are the result of a coin being struck by Clashed Dies (Dies clashed together previously with no coin in between). The 'HA' can be quite small in the early years to quite large in the 1950-1952 coins.... Nice find.
