I saw this beautifull silver coin, and maybe want to buy it... but before I do, I wanted to know some more about it. The buyer had priced it €45, but I have the option to buy it for a little less than that. He says the cataloguevalue is around €136,00. When I checked the Krause 1800-1900 from 2009 I can only find this one:

KM# 24 PESO

25.0000 g., 0.9000 Silver .7234 oz. ASW Ruler: Alfonso XIII
Obv: Bust of young Alfonso XIII left Rev: Crowned arms between columns

Date Mintage F VF XF Unc BU
1895 PGV 8,500,000 - 300 450 900 2,500 3,250

So how does he come at €136 if that is $178 usd

Or is this not the coin that I mentioned in Krause:

Help:-1-Peso,1895---Isla-De-Puerto-Rico-Value?
Help:-1-Peso,1895---Isla-De-Puerto-Rico-Value?

So any info is welcome.... Hoping it will be that one, than I will buy it ASAP!

Kingz Sorry to say the reason the coin is so cheap is because it is a counterfeit.

This is a modern NON-silver forgery that is probably cast. It will be underweight. The rims are too wide - the color is wrong and the details are "soft".

It is a $10 - $15 type item for specialists but as an investment it is WORTHLESS.

No, I believe that's it, KM #24.
He apparently is using a different source. (Maybe lucky for you!)
Now just hope it's genuine. And maybe he knows more than he's telling you.
Speaking of that the spacing of letters in the abbreviation above the majesty's head looks suspicious.

Thanks Bob & Svslav, I also thought it was a bit strange looking... but I didn't know for sure it would be a counterfeit, because the seller claims it was from his fathers silver collection. So could it maybe be a silver counterfeit? Anyway, I contacted the guy again to ask for the weight, diameter and some more info... Not that it will do much as I believe your arguments for the better, just want to know if this guy is trying to scam people here on purpose or not :)

The seller may not know. But I believe, based on the color and my knowledge of the type, that it is most likely white metal NOT SILVER. These have been made since about the 1960s or 70s when high strength plastic became cheap and was used to make dies.

hey bob, would that white metal be magnetic? I asked the seller to put a magnet to it, he said it doesn't stick...

Now I checked a fe ebay auctions, and there are a lot of counterfeits indeed. I tried to compare a few, with the coin showed in my original post. For me it is really difficult to find the fake ones, although some are obvious.. can anyone look at some of the pics to compare and make an explenation for how to spot it?

Also can anyone tell me the proper weight and diameter, the seller is willing to weight is (I think he is convinced it's real).

The first 2 you list are undoubtedly real - the third and last are likely real - the others are counterfeit.

Many white metals are NOT magnetic.

But if you look at the smaller details even in the ebay auctions you list the fine details are NOT SHARP on the counterfeits. Compare the assayer initials for example and you should see the difference readily.

Also remember - there is NO FREE LUNCH. There are NO bargains on ebay. To get a real coin you should expect to pay an appropriate amount - bargains are often a warning sign.
