Hello all,
My name is David and I haven't really been into coin collecting since I was a kid, but this hobby now has a little more interest for me since I started my other hobby of metal detecting last year.
Recently, I came across this coin, (Not dug, eyeball find),and I need some info and help from some experts on this one since after doing some research I am now totally confused.

The coin in question is a 1949 Canadian penny, and I would like to know if this is one of the rare ones.
I have a few pics but I can post more if needed.
My confusion is this...Which A in Gratia is the key one, the first or the second.
Some sites say the first, most here seem to point to the second...and what kind is the the coin that I have, also maybe the condition.
I know this coin is worth at least a penny, but it could be one of the rare ones worth a little more.
Thank you in advance for any help and info and opininions on this subject.

David

Sorry, just getting the hang of posting pics so my other post has full coin images. (Staff edit > Those pics added here below)

It's the last A and yours does not look like it lines up to me but I'm no pro.
And Welcome to CCF.

Yes I see that now.
Wolf is actually a member of my metal detecting forum also.
Looks like I piqued his interest.
Thanks

Another picture here...I definitely have an in-between variety.

Welcome here! Your coin is off-denticles.
The A to denticles cent is also known as the "high relief" obverse.
I came across a cache of these a while back--they stand out from the normal 1949 cent.

I Had about 10 rolls of 1949 small cents that I bought from a dealer a few years ago. These were not searched as the varitiy was new. I bought then and was lucky enough to find 2 of the rare variety. THe A in Question is the second A. The best way to search these coins is to get a strong magnifying glass ( I have 10x mag loupe ) and hold it at an angle going out from the centre towards the denticle using the top of the "A" as an arrow. Using this technique it becomes very easy to see which coin you have. This coin I believe is the the "A" points between which is the common variety.

By a sheer stroke of luck, a dealer allowed me to search through a cache of cents from the 40s.
In that pile, I found 6 of these; and several others at another local dealer in 2x2s.
It was a "hot spot" that has not since repeated itself...
