I am curious how the BEP decides how many star notes to print for any given district/block, and why star notes are sometimes printed before the regular run? For example, the BEP printed 640K A stars in Sept.10, but the regular A-A run was only printed in Oct.10. Also, when star notes are inserted into a given brick to replace defective notes, do they always come from the same district? Could A stars be inserted into a B district brick for example?

I imagine if star notes come out before nonstars it's because they messed up on the very first print run.

Just a thought, star notes should be printed prior to the non stars. How else could a sheet be replaced if those notes didn't exist yet?

That makes sense Nickelman, I didn't think of that. But that must also mean that they can replace defective notes from one district with stars from another district, otherwise they would have to print stars for all 12 districts, which we know they don't do.

Sometimes they do. For example 1976 $2 notes have stars printed for all 12 districts and circulated notes also printed for all 12. Then take the 1995 $2 notes where stars were printed for all 12 districts, but circulated notes were only printed for Atlanta.

That is interesting... were all of those star notes actually released or just printed?

edited to add:

Never mind the stupid question Nick... I have seen stars from other districts..... Actually, some of the Atlanta stars were printed before the regular Atlanta runs, but some were printed a few years later, and were printed solely for sale by the BEP to collectors in 2000, well after the printing of all of the circulation notes at Fort Worth in 1996-97.

These collector star notes with serial numbers between 20000001* and 20002000* were sold by the BEP as a special set of 12 notes (one for each district at a price of $495).

Notes with serial numbers between 20002001* and 20009999* were sold by the BEP individually for $6.95...... If your 1995 $2 Atlanta star does not have a number falling into this 20000001*-20009999* range, then it is a normal circulation note issued with a value of $2.

All notes of the FC-FH blocks were sold in sheet form only, but I do not know if some from the normal circulation blocks of FA, FB, and F* were also sold in sheets.

Here are some interesting ebay listings, all from the same seller in Turkey..... (normal circulation notes were of the FA, FB, and F* blocks).

I am pretty sure that COPEPAK was up and running then, so I have my doubts as to whether it could have packaged notes of this size.... I just don't know what to think about it, especially since the last two listings have the same note imaged.

The 1995 Atlanta stars were circulated, the others were printed as millennium notes and sold as collectibles I believe. There were only 9,999 printed from each district (other than Atlanta). The reason only 9,999 were printed was because the serial number started with 2000xxxx so only so many numbers were possible.
