I actually bought this for my dad for his birthday. He always gets us the current year proof set for christmas. So I got him one from his birthday.

I got it on ebay. Its in the original packaging from the US treasury. It is still sealed. Would it be bad to open this? I dont mean the plastic sealed coins, but the original yellowish envelope, with:

Treasury Department
United Startes Mint
Philadelphia 30, PA.

on the top left and

1960-P.C.
on the 1960-P.C.

Would it be bad to open the envelope? I took a picture if anyone really wants to see... but theres really not that much to it.

1960 had Lg date and Sm date cents.[$25-$40] If he is going to keep it it doesn't matter but if there is a chance he will want to sell you might want to leave it in the envelope. There might be a small premium on the unknown. Only $15 difference so it wouldn't be much.
Then again if you open it and it is a Sm date it's worth the $40.
So basically I'm no help at all.

If I recall correctly, the envelopes were not originally sealed from the mint.

Personally, I collect coins, not their containers. The only way you know for certain what you have is to open it.

Might as well open it. Statistically, the value is the same you'll just force the decision and know whether you have a $40 or $25 set.

[caveat: if you need EXACTLY $32.50 to make rent, sell it sealed!] :)

Well excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is SM and LG date, and how do you tell?

I got them on ebay. And from the description, they guy said he found a box full of these in his grandfathers drawer. (Or he found these sets already open, and old looking treasury envelopes, lol)

*EDIT*
After thinking about it, I guess it means that the dates are struck smaller then usual? And still how ca you tell if its smaller then usual or larger? Just by comparing it to a different coin?
