Ok, long story, lot of photos. Among granddad's collection I found a ratty old Whitman Jefferson album 1938-1964 that was complete. This was unusual, because granddad didn't do many albums (mostly did Dansco folders that toned the back of all the coins UGLY, UGLY, muddy brown). So an album -- a complete one -- was pretty rare. Initially I thought I would transfer it to a new Dansco and bring it up to date. BUT I noticed that many of his coins were pretty beat up and I would end up upgrading them which defeats the purpose of saving "his" collected coins. So instead, I got a better copy of his Whitman folder from my dealer (used - for free) and transferred his album to a newer album (and made them all line up straight -- I hate it when they're all topsy-turvy every which way). And I picked up a Jefferson Dansco for me. It's now up-to-date complete. So now, what do I do next? I'm thinking about a Roosevelt dime Dansco. Pics of granddad's album and mine follow:

Thanks, Savannah! No major differences with the current versions. The Whitman here is an out-of-print one that just goes from 1938 - 1964. I have just a little bit higher opinion of Dansco, but I think it's mostly personal preference. I have just about finished a set of BU *copper* memorial cents (so 1959 - 1982). That's an interesting set that looks very nice and was quick and cheap to assemble. I used the blank Dansco cent pages, and it fit on 2 pages really well. I have a hard time getting into cents that aren't shiny, the brown, smelly copper just doesn't get me excited like a roll of Shield nickels can. The local dealer told me he would let me look through his junk silver dimes and pull out the ones I want at his usual melt-sell prices (I can't remember what % over melt he uses, but right now it's $1.31 x face). Thought that would be a fun, inexpensive way to fill the front half of a Roosevelt dime book.

Yeah defiantly! I have a few older Roosevelt dimes but its harder to come buy them in circulation (considering I only get them in change because I only roll search for cents) I need to find a local coin shop, I had one but the guy is never there at the times his office hours are so I go there and no ones even working! so I can't buy anything so I'm just gonna go to the bank and buy some rolls to keep me occupied lol, I need a new set to start working on too, I have a couple walking liberty dollars, maybe I could start there.

Did you get all your nickels from circulation or did you buy some/all of them? I have wondered how long it would take to get them from circulation or if it is even reasonably possible.

I got higher quality War Nickels, so I bought most of those. Those were by far the most expensive going from $4 - $8. Most of them came from circulation, bought some I didn't find or wanted to upgrade. If I couldn't get some lines on the steps, I wanted at least the front porch of Monticello to have some detail. Even the ones I couldn't find in circulation were very affordable, but sorting those rolls was fun. I miss it, which is the main reason for considering dimes next.

I say...get a dansco and put Grandads collection in it and mark it as such Then get another Dansco for upgrades and build the set again.
I've picked up Danscos cheap from dealers. Whatever book I can pick up , I get, Just to have something to put that piece that I got at a great price.

lorax, not just possible, but I've done it more than 2 dozen times. (This is going through hundreds of boxes) As a matter of fact, I have another set I'm putting together, using the sides of 100. boxes as mounts. Just something different, to hang in the bat-cave.

Nice collections. Finding some these are to find in circulation. I just got started a few months ago. For some weird reason ii put all my end of day pocket change in a container everyday for years, like over ten years. A lot of the change came the vending machine at work. Many of the coins are barely circulated. Sso, I'm off to a decent start. I only wish I knew someone close to share and trade with.
I tried to get my nephew into it but, it isn't his thing right now.
Have a great time with the dimes!

MY suggestion is to keep anything you received from him in an Album in that Album for a remebrance of him. Anything in any Folder should be taken out and put in Albums. Folders are just not good for coins. Most are not ment for long term and/or serious collectors. Some of the problems with Folders are the exposures to anything and everything since nothing protects the front of the coins. Now the worst part. The process in making a Folder is to slap glue on sheets of paper, place slotted cardboard pages on them, allow to dry, cut to shape. HOWEEVER, this means that the shinny stuff you see in the back of the slots is left over glue and that touching coins is just not good. Many kids like that though since a well worn coin may fall out so they spit on that glue and now the coins stay in place. People have a problem pushing coins into those slots since they are tapered. So many push with their fingers or thumbs as hard as possible to get the coins in place. I've known kids that use a rubber hammer for that. Again, take all those coins out of the Folders and either place in Albums or 2x2's or even a plastic roll for now until you do get Albums. And it really doean't matter what brand of Album you end up with although this forum is a heavily populated with DANSCO PEOPLE. Me, I'm a Whitman person for Albums.
