Here's how it works.....

Custom Searches*
*See below for info I would need from you.

I can create an ebay search from criteria that you supply and display it permanently on our eBay Coin Shopping site. You won't have to go directly to ebay to see the items that fit your criteria. There will be a link to the ebay search on the page though in case you want to.

It doesn't matter if you only need it temporarily, when your done with it, it will stay for others to use if they wish.

Custom RSS Feeds*
*See below for info I would need from you.

Basically the same as the search, except you get a small piece of software called an RSS reader or aggregator. We use and recommend RSSReader, a totally free one that you can download and install in about 60 seconds.

You then supply it with the RSS URL that I will give you. The reader will sit quietly in your system tray and periodically check the URL. It will only bother you is there are new items or changes in current items that match your exact criteria. That's what it's designed to do. It saves you time searching by doing it for you automatically!

OK, let's try one out. Go download the reader.

Now let's suppose you have been looking for an 1881 CC Morgan dollar to fill that gaping hole in your collection.

Here's the URL I would create just for you...

http://www.coincommunity.com/rss/1881CCMorgan.asp
(It will look like a mess if you click on it, but the reader knows how to handle it. )

Open up your reader and click on the ADD button up top, and add this URL. It will pull them all in from ebay. Every time a new one is listed, your reader will grab it for you.

If you set your reader to check every 10 minutes, the longest the precious Morgan you need would be listed without you knowing it is 9 minutes and 59 seconds.

Great Stuff!

So if you want a custom URL just post a thread here. Please start a new topic for each request.

If you don't want to post it here, just shoot me an email.

* What I Will Need From You.

Pretty simple, just be as specific as you can to narrow down the search. Here are some things you can tell me....

  • Keywords *

  • Excluded Keywords

  • Price Range

  • Seller ID

  • eBay Category **

  • eBay Site (Country)

  • Sort Order (Ending First | Newly Listed | Highest Priced | Lowest Priced)

  • All or "Buy it Now" only

* I can do fairly complex searches. For instance MS65 or MS-65. I can do anything the normal ebay search can do.

** eBay Coin Categories are here.

Rest in Peace

For those of us using Macs (I have an iBook G3 900), I found NewsFire RSS Feed http://www.newsfirerss.com/ following a Google search for Mac RSS feeds. A LOT of them came up in the search, but this one appeared to me to work best for me. It's shareware, costs $18.99 and they take PayPal only and although I could have used a credit card, it happened I had enough in my PayPal account to cover it. I actually tried several other feeds including one or two freebies, but they seemed too complicated for my farm boy mentality and there were some complicating ads/banners for the freebies and they didn't seem to be as flexible as this paid software.

I have found the RSS feed to be one really, really neat tool of which I have only just begun to scratch the surface.

Sounds like a great tool. Will this offer be available for awhile? I would like to try this later this year if possible.

Yep. As long as ebay doesn't break it.

Bobby, is it too complicated to create a feed code for my own webpage?
I would like to try to make something like that so my friends can follow up my blogs easier.

Edit:
I figured out that blogger.com already supplies atom feed.

How about such a feed for the forum?

For instance, I read specific threads, and I believe many people would appreciate customised feeds to notify when their favourite sections are modified. I however don't even know if that's applicable.

There is a possibility I will do this in the future but it's not in the plans right now. In the mean time subscriptions can work for that.

Believe it or not, RSS can kill a forum. Think about it for a minute.

You mean the number of hits will decrease?
Probably. Some regular members switch to RSS and just visit when their favourite sections are active.

If you mean a software-wise kill, I'm not well equipped to comment on that:)

You're probably right, subscriptions are already good tools for the purpose.

On a free to the user, ad-supported site, RSS can be disastrous. Users can't support the site if they're not here.

It seems I posted a request here for a custom ebay search that has since disappeared.
So where should I post my request?
