Perhaps this topic should not go here.

John Donahoe takes over as CEO today. A very large article was in USA Today newspaper this morning. Based on some of the observations in the article, perhaps some positive changes are upcoming.

It looks like some of the new directions they are considering are more fixed price sales, similar to Amazon and others. Also seems that the seller boycott in February did catch ebay attention. Did not mention that concerns would be addressed however.

It was also mentioned that ebay is developing a new comprehensive search engine customer feedback, , shipping costs, Paypal data as well as other factors.

Positives given to Donahoe included better search, crackdown on fraud and reduced listing fees.

I agree on the first two, but the listing fees is a mere pittance compared to completed sales fees increasing as high as 25%. The business model currently in place appears similar to larger businesses and corporation where commodity items, such as CD's and video games get the benefit of the costing structures. "Casual" sellers take the brunt of the higher costs, and, I for one, do not believe this will change.

I like the idea of fixed prices.

I'm always on ebay bidding and such, but I do find myself paying closer attention to the 'buy it now' items.

I think the idea of bidding and waiting 8 days for a 4 dollar item just seems like a waste of time to me.

Although it's rare I buy a very expensive item, so I'd imagine having the option to bid and out-bid people is great in that sense.

I'm surprised someone hasn't come in to challenge ebay they really do have a monopoly on the online auctions.

I sort of think them having the monopoly makes them seem like a safer bet.

I'd rather buy off ebay using paypal than anywhere else. I feel like there's less of a chance I'll get messed up

There's been plenty that have tried. Once they get to the point that they could be threatening in the future one of two things happens.

1. ebay finds some kind of infringement and files suit against them.

2. ebay buys them just to shut them down.

And FYI, they are not even close to a monopoly. eBay and monopoly shouldn't even be in the same sentence. There are thousands upon thousands of other choices you could make.

While I do use the odd BIN once in a while, I find most of them are dreaming, overpriced lists of sellers. Oztion is an aussie site full of BIN items and they just don't sell.

Besides, auctions and sniping are more fun.

"perhaps some positive changes are upcoming."

Well, certainly plenty of changes as far as Australia is concerned. Seems to be a matter of opinion about positivity of them.

Would I be correct in my assumption that ebay Australia might be the test market for proposed world-wide changes? I know a lot of multinational companies do use Australia for trialling new proposals.

Just to quote meself, the last week has seen a turn around on Oztion. The flood of new sellers are actually listing some BIN items at reasonable prices and there have even been bidding wars.

You would be correct! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/17/t...&oref=slogin
