I have a semi-key date 1931S Buffalo nickel I bought for $25 already graded XF45,I'm thinking about putting this on ebay for sale, should I go ahead and have it graded, just because it is a key date?I personally see this as a nice coin,as it jumped out at me,even though I hadn't realized it was a semi-key date. The obverse is beautiful, the reverse is a little worn, but the horn is still quite in tact.I just don't know,is it worth it?I need your oppinions :) sn31.

Welllll, it isn't all that much of a semi-key date with 1.2 million minted, so it's value after grading and slabbing by a top TPG would be only about 40 dollars, presuming it kept its XF-45 grade. Depending upon which service it's submitted (Express slow service @ $50, Regular very slow service @ $30 or ultra-slow service at $15; the latter may take up to six months before it's returned), it might or might not be worth it to you to have it graded. May I ask who graded it XF-45 and would you be able to post an image of it? I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the best I could do right now. Fred

I have the same questions as Fred, who graded it EF-45 and can we get a pic in the coin grading practice forum. Its possible to sell that coin right here on the forum also and save the ebay fee's ,, Rick

And save on the Grading fee's. How discouraging is it, to have to pay so much money for an opinion on a coins grade?

I would keep it. I has a low mintage the only one lower is the 1926S. If you get a better one then sell it but first list it for a few days on here.

It sounds like a nice coin sn31. Having it graded and slabbed doesn't sound economical at this point. I'd just keep it in your collection and not bother having it graded.
Sometimes "dealers" will overgrade and that can be deceiving. You may end up spending more on having it graded then it's worth in the long run.
I'd be glad to pic and post it for you so that you could get a better opinion from everyone here. I know that's a pain for you to send me the coin and so forth but, you know that I'd gladly do it.

Hi sn31
I agree with dsking ,, this is one of those low mintage but hoarded semi key date coins, this keeps the values fairly low in the circulated grades,, its a nice coin to have but will probly not pay for itself to have slabbed.
