On the reverse of this coin there appears to be some lines from the motto (GOD) down to the eagle's head, and, to a lesser extent, below the eagle's left wing. I don't recall seeing this on any other 1888S I've looked at, so my curiousity has gotten the best of me. Is this a common occurance with this year and mint mark, and I just haven't run across it before, and what caused those lines?
Looks like file lines on the die from dressing up a snag or flaw that occurred. The fields would be the high elevation on the die. First 1888S I've seen with that on it. They also appear under the wing or r/s as viewed. nlp
