I am also wondering why these holes are not at the top of the obverse so they would hang straight if on a string.

Well, I won the auction although the bid went up to a little over $100.
Still, I think this is a nice coin even with the hole. With the position the hole is in all details can be seen well.
Maybe whoever put the hole in the coin didn't want to drill a hole in Liberty's head (?).

Yes, sad about the hole BUT at least they didn't drill a 1/4" hole in it.
While looking at this one I saw some on ebay that had liberty's head drilled away.
I can't wait to see it in hand!
