OK guys, Here is another good one for ya. This is the sellers pictures, but I hope it is good enough. Basically, I just want to know what you think the grade could be. It has never been graded, so this could turn out good for me. Does it look like it could have some cleaning issues? Also, whatever grade you think it could be, what do you think the price of this one could be...I love this Morgan...I am a new collector, and this is one of my favorites...
thanks everyone,
mike.

16 views, no responses? I want to hear all of your grading, not just the "regular pros". That's why we are all here. To learn and get opinions! Don't worry about disagreements with others as this seems to happen with the grading of ALL coins and 3rd party grading companies... Just shout out your thoughts! My guess is a ms 63... Maybe some cleaning issues. Btw, this is my grading based on the sellers pics, not the coin in hand, as it is in the hands of USPS at the moment. So luster might be different when I get it... Also looked like another weak strike from Orleans, but still interested in what you think the value is!

now that I am looking at the pictures, there is no way it is a ms...there is some wear on the hair, so that would make it an AU right? Also cleaning an issue? I am just trying to learn the grade scale of morgans, so, anyone have advice on where I can reseach more...thanks again. mike.

I would grade this AU 50.

ANA Grading Standards

PF Proof A specially made coin distinguished by sharpness of detail and usually with a brilliant mirror like surface. Proof refers to the method of manufacture and is not a condition, but normally the term implies perfect mint state unless otherwise noted and graded as below.
Mint State or Uncirculated The terms Mint State (MS) and Uncirculated (Unc.) are interchangeably used to describe coins showing no trace of wear. Such coins may vary to some degree because of blemishes, toning or slight imperfections as described in the following subdivisions.
MS70 Perfect Uncirculated Perfect new condition, showing no trace of wear. The finest quality possible, with no evidence of scratches, handling or contact with other coins. Very few regular issue coins are ever found in this condition.
MS65 Choice Uncirculated An above average Uncirculated coin which may be brilliant or lightly toned and has very few contact marks on the surface or rim. MS67 through MS62 indicate slightly higher or lower grades of preservation.
MS60 Uncirculated Has no trace of wear but may show a number of contact marks, and surface may be spotted or lack some luster.
AU55 Choice About Uncirculated Barest evidence of light wear on only the highest points of the design. Most of the mint luster remains.
AU50 About Uncirculated Has traces of light wear on many of the high points. At least half of the Mint luster is still present.
EF45 Choice Extremely Fine Light overall wear shows on highest points. All design details are very sharp. Some of the Mint luster is evident.
EF40 Extremely Fine Design is lightly worn throughout, but all features are sharp and well defined. Traces of luster may show.
VF30 Choice Very Fine Light even wear on the surface and highest parts of the design. All lettering and major features are sharp.
VF20 Very Fine A moderate amount of wear is noticeable on the high points of the coin's design. All major details are clear.
F12 Fine The coin shows moderate to considerable even wear throughout. Entire design is bold with an overall pleasing appearance.
VG8 Very Good Well worn with main features clear and bold although rather flat.
G4 Good Heavily worn with the design visible but faint in areas. Many details are flat. Common coins in "Good" condition are not particularly desirable pieces for collectors. Rare or valuable coins in this condition, however, are often saved when no others are available.
AG3 About Good Very heavily worn with portions of lettering date and legends worn smooth. The date may be barely readable.

AU-50 to AU-53. I don't see any evidence in these photos of a harsh cleaning.

I'm not going to guess its from "coin deals for you"...I DIDN"T SAY THAT...
HUMMMM ebay.......AND what "true grade" it is? tuff decision it is...
UNC it is not...But
I have to throw a bone at OZ,,,I would think at AU 50 there would be no chest feathers, which are closer to AU 58.... BUT NOT FLAT CHESTED
The right tip of the eagles feather is worn so its NOT UNC. clearly seen...but with the advent of breast feathers not flat or unclear..I am thinking AU 55'58.......NOT MS ...As always if you don't know OZ you should!
Rest in Peace

Its at least a high AU; the fields are very clean and I'd assume most wear is strike....too clean for AU-50

Doesn't high AU require mostly original luster? This one has nice details but seems luster is, um, absent...

Edit... Might just be the photo lighting

Nice looking coin, no dings or bag marks that I can see. Typical weak strike New Orleans mint, I'm would grade this coin at MS-62.

Hi Kempire, I think that is a great Morgan. It would take a good look in-hand for sure but it could be MS. For a couple of reasons:

1. There do not appear to be any contact marks.

2. O marks can be weak strikes.

If it is the right coin, the price is right you can't do better than that. Good Luck

A good grader would help.

Assuming there is luster in hand that doesn't show in the picture, I'll up my grade to AU-58 based strictly on light wear on the high points (i.e. wing tips).

If the coin does grade MS-62, you have yourself quite a valuable piece; $1200 or so at auction in the grade. Maybe you can get him slabbed so we can get a TPG opinion on this one?

That's my main concern, if it comes back au-50, and I pay to have it slabbed, now I'm upside down on the coin. I wish I knew of a good place up here to bring it to.
