Drsandmand, I agree with your points to an extent.
I charge actual shipping so no loss to me.
I can figure costs of 12.5% including ebay & paypal
Once you learn how to sell, the time invested is minimal. You just have to develop a system and save templates.
I have rarely been disappointed with the final prices realized...but it does have alot to do with how and when you list...that is also a matter of learning.

Very true, Maineman! I also should have noted that coins typically sell cheaper sight unseen, even with photos. Considering the costs of both, weigh the gains from auctioning items unseen vs. selling the same coin sight seen to a collector or dealer. Many dealers work off of 10-15%, and that is what you are throwing away to ebay and Paypal for the right to sell it yourself. Obviously, the option to deal sight seen is dependent on where you live. For some, ebay is a life line.

And I think it is important to note that there are a lot of collectors who will not buy coins unseen, don't do ebay, etc. I just want to make the point that ebay is not always the best way to sell or buy.

Oh, and when working with dealers, you always have the option to trade. Great way to pick through their stuff and get more than you bargained for.

Drsandman, do you have any suggestions of a better place to sell ? I know dealers can't come close to paying me what I get on ebay,so I certainly would be glad to hear of a better place.

Have you tried the auctions on the forum? Check them out and see if they work for you. I've been using it with good results.

Yeah, I've had decent luck at coin shows. You really never know what you will get, especially if you have a rare or interesting coin. Pick out dealers that are selling coins similar to what you want to sell or trade. Talk to them and show them what you have. And hey, if you show off your stuff to 10 or 15 dealers... you will be generating interest among the collectors who notice it as well. Collectors may even chat with you and make offers.

The coin show I went to, most dealers seemed to be buying and selling at or very close to greysheet prices with markups around 10-15%.

drs ,

the problem with these sort of errors is no greysheet price sheet can put a price on them.

I was not talking about things like double dies, varities those do have price guidelines

But die cracks, broadstrikes, offcenter, MAD and so forth it seems what people will pay is the price

coop,I've checked out the auctions on CCF...my opinion is that they don't bring what ebay does even with the lack of fees. Maybe I'll give it a try, but most coins I've sold on ebay have given me an average of 50% profit, and many times 100%.
drsandman, I've never gotten good prices from dealers...maybe you've run into some generous guys...of course I stopped visiting dealers almost 15 years ago when I discovered I could do better privately...then ebay came along and I haven't looked back.

I could probably get more for what I sell on ebay. In fact I figure on selling what don't move here over there. I'm at the point in my life where I'm startging to sell my collections. I've always said I was saving the coin I buy to sell them. Well my body is telling me now, it's time. So I'm starting to sell them off. I've been off work for that last 6 weeks and still no progress to healing yet. But I'll keep a positive attitude whole selling off my coins.

Well Coop, keeping a good attitude is a pretty important step in healing, make sure you do. Hope you don't sell everything and lose interest because we sure need you around here.

Don't worry about selling everything. Eventually it will all go, but I plan to keep looking and re-checking what I have checked once before. As you learn more, the more things you might have missed the other time through the coins.
